Snow in Tahoe?

I'm headed to Tahoe in 2 weeks, and I'm a little concerned about the snow..

I know November, early December can be slow for snow, but the other day there was like a 23 inch base at Heavenly..and only a fraction of the lifts open. I've never boarded @ Heavenly when anything was closed, so I'm hoping it dumps for 2 weeks. Looking at the forecast for the resort it says there could be up to 5 feet this week..that would be great. It also says that tree riding is prohibited until further notice, and none of the parks are open..bummer.

So whats the word Tahoe guys...how much snow does it take to get everything opened up? A trip to Tahoe isn't right unless you can get to Mott Canyon

I like Snowbasin (Ogden, UT); thanks to the Olympics, this resort is really nice. Now that my parents no longer live in Utah, I probably won't ski there much any longer.

Heavenly is great -- I used to have a season pass. Hard to pick a favorite... I like Kirkwood as well. I still haven't skied at Mammoth (but have hiked -- absolutely beautiful area!); one of these days...

Enjoy your trip; the snow is coming!

Re: Snow in Tahoe?

It dropped 8" in Kingvale at a friends house last night. Truckee is expecting up to 24" by tomorrow night. The storm coming in late Weds to Thursday is colder but they are not sure how much moisture is in it. Also there is another storm moving in a couple of days after these, it should be here around xmas eve. But they are only guessing. I'm ready to go now. I was in Mammoth this last Friday and it was good. The whole mountain was open and there was prob 3' base. The snow was really good too. It was more like Co snow. Not a lot of ice either. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: Snow in Tahoe?

yess sounds like some snow...thanks guys.

Thanks for the info VooDoo. I've boarded @ Park City/Heavenly/Big Sky. I've always heard good things about Kirkwood. I really want to get to Jackson Hole someday.

Re: Snow in Tahoe?

I don't even bother going to Heavenly unless they have at least a 10 foot base to cover all the rocks and tree trunks.

They have about 2 feet now and will have maybe 6 feet after the next couple of storms. A storm or 2 after that and it should be good enough to trek up there -- hopefully no later than mid-January. Looking forward to using the new quad on Olympic and to checking out the additional trails they've supposedly put in along that run that I read about somewhere.
