Re: weightlifting supplements?

You may want to check out this "old" book:
Amazon.com: Nutrition and Athletic Performance: Books: Ellington Darden

Ellington Darden was a body builder, and is a PhD in exercise physiology, as well as doing post doctoral work on nutrition. Old book, good read. Only change is the view on fat since the 70's. For accurate information on that see: Amazon.com: Know Your Fats : The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils and Cholesterol: Books: Mary G. Enig
The information is incredible, but presentation is pretty bad (no proof reader?)

Never underestimate the Placebo Effect, and supplements bad, real food good.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

I don't lift any more, but I previously had good results w/creatine, lots of high protein/carb supps and heavy low rep lifting.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

The number one supplement- and it's absolutely free- is rest. Lots of it. A good nights sleep as often as you can get it. This is when the body repairs itself. In todays fast paced world with our careers demanding so much, we forget to shut it all out and allow ourselves to relax and rejuvinate.

I'm finding that any vitamin pills from GNC that claim to be for athleticism or those over forty are probably nothing more than a bit of advertising bunk. I've tried many protein shakes over the years ( most are never on the shelf more than a few years before they disappear) and they don't live up to expectations.

I do take L-carnitine and chromium picolinate along with Muscle Milk and I feel a little better and have more energy even though I am not bulking up or gaining extrordinary strength. The chromium is supposed to help burn fat stores for extra energy.

I've added running, swimming and stadium stairs to my routine and have found that Fast Twitch an hour before and Endurox within 30 minutes after (for recovery) are allowing me more time and distance on a progressing scale. A year ago I couldn't run 3 blocks, now I can run a 5k (3.2 miles).

Thanks for posting some of your ideas and sites that i can visit. It's so easy to get bored with the same routines and workouts and hit those plateaus. I second the advice that it's best to change it up and keep the body working a little harder.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

some good points 4RnrJ

Gakic does good to get your blood pumping and keeps it going throughout a workout. It's supposed to result in an "immediate 10% increase in strength". I would say that's completely false but you can definitely tell if you've taken it or not. After some warmup sets your veins are pumping and you're ready to go.

I've been drinking Ensure (Like a nutritional supplement..like they give people in hospitals/etc. that can't eat) for the past couple of years when I need to gain weight before the season. Problem is it results in just about all fat, but it definitely adds the pounds fast when you need them.
