weightlifting supplements?

Any avid weightlifters out there that can recommend some good LEGAL supplements? Already using designer whey protein and creatine--I'm not crazy about the creatine so its time for a change.

I'm recently getting back into a great lifting routine (after about a year off), and while I'm getting my size and strength back slowly, I wouldn't mind having an edge to help things happen faster...

Never really used supplementation in the past, so looking forward to any input on this!

Thanks!!!

IMO Muscletech!

I have used most of there products for quite sometime now and love 'em. Theres good stack combo's and it's all legal. The only crime is how big your gonna get.

Good Luck. hope this helps, BTW Join GNC gold program and load up at the beginning of each month, this saves you mucho dinero.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

Don't waste your money.

Ive been at it 15 years and have tried just about everything.

Protein powder and a clean diet of tuna, rice, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs as well as a good workout regimine will be your best bet.

The plan of attack has alot has to do with your body type too.

The only thing on the market what worked was ephedrine and its hard to come by. It cut the fat, killed appetite, gave energy.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

Ruther gave good advise, I'd add egg whites but I'm not too hot about the ephedra though.

Body type is the #1 factor in success, you can't make Lance Armstrong into Arnold w/o some sort of illegal supplementation.

Excess protein will get nothing but an empty wallet and expensive urine and excrement. Science doesn't lie on this subject. Numerous studies have clearly verified that the body can only absorb 1.2-1.7 grams of protein/kg of body weight (one study showed 2.4g/kg but nothing has backed that up yet), any more than that will be "voided" by the body, some turned into body fat (but mostly other substances are more easily converted to body fat with the excess calories).

That's the bottom line. All the "Weider" adds and GNC commercials will tell you different but none can be backed up with published studies. This friendly advise comes from someone who has been in the "fitness industry" since 1988, licensed as a personal trainer, coached professional cyclists to the World Championship level and is currently working as a Certified Athletic Trainer (NATA) and Performance Enhancement Specialist (NASM) with a degree in Exercise Science from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Take it for what it's worth. I know you don't want to hear it, there is no "magic pill" and I'm sure there will be many who will say "I used X and it worked great for me", I'm just saying what science says, not anecdotal evidence...

Re: weightlifting supplements?

Any of you guys had results with Nitric Oxide? I ordered some N.O. Explode with my last set of supplements and have been taking it before I go to the gym in the morning. I used to start tiring out after 30 minutes of weights and now I don't miss a beat. Maybe its just a Placibo effect and I'm just as tired but it seems to help. Thinking about buying more when I order more supplements.

People are claiming gains from NO. It gets the hype that Creatine got in the early-mid 1990s.

The real results are yet to be seen. You may feel a good pump from it.

I am all for the Placebo effect. If you can take 2 teaspoons of flour and you get a better workout then, hey, it works.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

Thanks for the input guys. My diet is pretty good now, so at least I'm on track with that. And i'm not doing excessive protein, only what my body will absorb as a function of the body weight to grams ratio.

I know there's no magic pill, but it would be nice to get back to where I was 2 years ago FASTER! Man, I got to a great point (strong, pretty ripped, low body fat), and then work got in the way and too much travelling led to me not working out as much, eating poorly at restaurants and airports etc, always on the go...

Like I said, now that I have time to work on my body again, I'm getting there slowly, but its tough to be patient...

Cool. I was into it pretty hard for a long time and got pretty strong I quit everything after our son was born at 28 weeks.

Well he is 2 now and I am finally back into it so look on the bright side, if you were into it before, you will get back to where you were ALOT faster than when if you had started from the beginning. Your muscles remember very quickly.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

I take creatine, protein powder and weightgainer.

Re: weightlifting supplements?

A couple of thoughts:

First off, stay away from GNC / Vitamin World / etc. Going there is a good way to go broke. I've been using netrition.com for years and have always loved their prices. I'm sure there are other good internet stores, but I happen to like netrition.

I've gone through various stages of trying all sorts of things. Just protein, protein + creatine, complete stacks from Gaspari, BSN, etc. I'm not convinced on most of it.

Right now, I just drink a protein shake on occasion (100% Gold Standard Whey), and sometimes take something to get me going in the morning if I work out early (before 5am). For that, I use Gaspari Nutrition's Superpump250. It is a NO mix which does a good job of getting me going in the morning. The only problem with any NO supliment is that is a total gutbuster if you take too much. I barely take one scoop (they recommend 3) and I eat something real small first. If I take it on an empty stomach I get a horrible stomach ache. Also, start REAL small with NO stuff, the first time I took it, I thought I was going to have a heart attack my heart was beating so fast. I almost threw it away right there, but I went back and added a bite to eat beforehand and went from 2 scoops to just a half scoop until i got used to it. When I'm out of this container, will I get more, I'm not quite sure yet. I'm making gains, but I don't know if it has anything to do with it, I only use it a couple of times a week when I go in real early.

The last thing I can recommend is think outside normal training routines. I had been doing standard weightlifting for I don't know, 10 - 12 years now, and I'd constantly hit plataus. Since then I've been doing a lot of things from crossfit.com and things I know gymjones.com uses (the folks who trained the 300 guys). And I'm WAY stronger now. Like it is said on the crossfit FAQ, the level of size you can get is kinda like this:
#1 Bodybuilding on steroids
#2 Crossfit on steroids
#3 Crossfit w/o steroids
#4 BodyBuilding w/o steroids

I don't do solely crossfit, but I also agree with that ranking above. You can't get real benefits from Bodybuilding w/o using steroids, your body simply resists it too much. I think it is good for you to completely switch training regiments every couple of months. Not to follow fads, but to just keep your body guessing.

That of course is my opinion, please just read around a try different things. One thing that really helped the 300 cast was shocking their bodies on a daily basis by never doing the same workout in a 4 month period.

Good luck.
