Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

I've got a pair of Yakima Sprocket Rockets on the top of my Gobi Stealth. I've had no problems with them. I've also used a hitch mounted system for when there wasn't room on the roof rack for the bikes.

I post this for information purposes only. Not ragging on the rear racks.

I owned a large mountain bike racing team called Wolf Creek a few yars back.

We sponsored just over 300 riders nation wide.

Supplying bikes and parts to top amatuer riders.

During the 4 years we did this we lost one bike from a roof rack, by it being ran into the garage. Not good.

We lost 23 by being hit from the rear on the back of the a vehicle.

We lost 2 by them falling off the rear mount rack.

And we lost 3 by them being stolen fromt the rear rack.

Those numbers should give you an idea of how safe rear racks are.

Do as you guys see fit, but I would never under any circumstance place a high end bike in a bumper situation.

Ride on guys.

How does most car insurance deal w/ this. Seems like most the time it would be someone running into you so their insurance should have to cover it. I am guessing it is an issue of replacement value compared to what they believe it is worth?

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

Most were covered by insurance, but the value was reduced. These were titainum frames, and could not be replaced easily. And it seemed the quickest there was compensation was two weeks. Some took over a month. But in honesty most were damaged while parked. No compentsation basically. Just not a good place to carry a 5000.00 bike. You would not stick a high end camera or anything of value back there in most cases. I understand the ease, but the worry would drive me nuts.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

I recently got Yakima Spare Joe and it's been a champ. It was a little bit of pain to get the positioning right, but once it's been on, it's been fine. Made a trip from Houston to Austin and back with no problems.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

I finally got some pics of my raxter rack with the bike on.

I love the rack and plan on getting another one since this is the one I use on my car which has the 1.25in hitch. I plan on getting one that will hold 2 bikes in the 2in hitch.

Raxter is a small company out of Oklahoma, these racks are built solid and light weight and have an indexing feature which rocks.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

Hi everyone! I stumbled upon this thread through the search and have some questions because I'm looking for a hitch mounted rack.

First of all, I have a Cannondale with a LEFTY front fork. Is there a bottom holding rack that also moves out of the way of the door? Also has anyone had any issues with the BACKUP sensors with the rack on?

So far that raxter one looks good, but I'm unsure if it can fold up and clear the spare tire.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

Well I just picked up a Yakima HOOKUP for $210 before tax (it was on clearance plus %20 off Yakima Products at sports chalet). So far, I've found another person that has this rack and they mentioned it was a tight fit to fold it up when not in use (over at MTBR.com).

Hopefully I have pictures soon, but if anyone has this please let me know how it works!!!

Thanks.
