Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

there are so many hitch mount options, not even sure where to start. i initially liked the north shore rack, but $500 is a little steep. is it better to have the rack hold it at the wheels or on the frame? i think i may go with a yakima or the raxter one.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

I would go for the raxter all the way, customer service from them is AWESOME. Its not often that you call a company and are able to talk to the owner/ Engineer behind the product here is a link that reviews their racks.

Raxter Bike Rack Reviews

Raxter Rack - Mtbr.com Pro Review - Mtbr.com Forums

I have had on on my car and I drive like I stole my car and the bikes are on there solid. Very confident in the rack light weight and easy to handle. I also like the fact that the rack does not make contact with the frame putting unnecessary scratches on it.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

How does everyone lock their hitch rack to the car? I have the Yakima HookUp, but the Yakima hitchlock accessory looks like I could break it with my toe.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

I am going to get an ARB or Stealth roof rack without the mesh option. What type of gear do I need to get in order to fit my bike on top? Both of these roof racks are straight bars that run across the top.

Hollywood Spare-Tire Rack
I love it - I've taken it to Death Valley during 60mph windstorm with 2 bikes and it worked great.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

Found a Swagman XP bike rack for 1/2 off. Could'nt pass up the deal. When I tried to install it, I found out that the model that was 1/2 off was for a Honda with the offset tire mount. It still works on a Cruiser but tilted at 45 degree angle, which didnt work very well. So I cut the mounting plate and had a friend re-weld the stem back on at the correct angle. Now it is perfect.

Re: The Official "Bike Rack" Thread

Using the Yakima lowrider max system. Mounted one Yakima crossrail in front. To keep height down I fabricated some clamps to secure the back end of the bike rails to a cross member of the factory rack. This way the rig can pass under my garage door (sans bikes, of course). Also gives an overall level appearance, which I like.

I'm 6'-1" tall so I can get the bikes up and down okay. Shorter people may have trouble with roof racks for the FJ. Its a looong way up there. I also take the seatpost/saddle off the mountain bike to give me a little more overhead clearance. A seatpost quick-release is handy for that.
