Mount Baldy snowshoe fun 1-26-08 SoCal

Traffic going up the mountain road was at a complete standstill due to an accident. I lost at least 1 hour there so had a very late start (9:30am)

Started at Manker Flats/San Antonio Falls road (6k' alt.) and then up towards the old warming hut at 8k'. The top is 10k' but I knew there wouldn't be time to get there with more storms coming in. Even though others had started before me the snow was very soft and my snowshoes sunk in quite a bit.

After a slow slog up I made it to the hut. Some others that I passed made it up and we passed cameras around. Here are a couple

Looking downhill

Temp was 32 deg F with winds gusting to 20mph. There were clouds building up at the top of Baldy so I headed back down.

Looking back up from the trail and the peak is obscured by clouds

Looking out under the clouds you could easily make out Catalina Island and some drilling platforms

Made it back down to the truck in good time (3PM) and got home for a hot shower, meal and a good sleep...

Sweet! I was out there a few days ago and the traffic was pretty bad as well. Lots of kids running around on the side of the road made it scary to drive at all near Mt. Baldy Village.

There was one idiot at the bridge just uphill of the Village. He had his crummy rice-rocket parked half into the downhill traffic lane as he sat on the hood drinking beer. He was in a squinty eyed cheap beer stupor watching as cars had to go into oncoming traffic to get around him. Not a cop in sight either.

If you would have slammed your rig into him/his, it would have amounted to little more than retroactive birth control -- but there's always paperwork to fill out and that's a pain in the neck. And there's insurance issues as well to repair the paint transfers.

T - "The road was slick, I applied the brakes and couldn't stop."

Witness - "I could have sworn TEOTWAKI was accelerating. His engine was roaring."

T - "I down-shifted to try to stop faster."

Witness - "Oh, that makes sense"

T - "I feel bad about running him down. Honest I do."

Geez....... you busted me up! Wish I had been driving my '89 Bronco so I could have done exactly what you implied:

"..But Occifer.... I wuz just avoiding the endangered Yellow Pavement Slug and then this rice rocket jumped in front of me. Huh? Those are painted stripes and not slugs? Thanks goodness no slugs were harmed!!"
