Gerber LMF II Review

Sometimes in our search for “All things MOLLE”, we come across some products that are so spectacularly good or bad that we have decided to start a series of reviews to share our experiences.

I had been searching quite a while for a good survival knife that would have a MOLLE scabbard to place on M-PAC racks for photo-ops and for personal use. Those people who know me would tell you that I am rarely without some sort of knife on my person. I have noticed that some of our customers have knives mounted on their M-PAC Racks as well.

Generally, in the spring…I will spend a lot of time in the woods foraging for mushrooms and this is the time that I carry a survival type knife like the Gerber LMF. The knife has a lot of features not found in the cheaper knives on the market. The first thing that stands out is how well this knife is made and thought out. The over-molded handle is attractive and successfully limits blistering during hard use. I bought the Green model which actually has kind of a weird “day-glo” sheen to it, if I bought another one, it will be Tan or Black. The blade almost 5 inches and holds an edge well; I hammered through wood blocks and then used the sheath sharpener to bring back an edge successfully. The blade appears stout and well tempered…something that I have come to expect from Gerber Knives

As you can see by the pictures the knife can be used as a hammer, thus making it a true multi-tool. There is complete separation between the tang and butt cap, so the knife absorbs the shocks from hammering and as a bonus will prevents the shocks of electricity if you are stupid enough to hit some thing live.

The multi-tool theme continues with the knifes ability to convert to a spear by using the knifes smartly situated grooves and lashing holes.

Probably the feature that attracted me the most was glass breaking point on the handle. This allows you the ability to easily break automotive glass/Plexiglas to either get in or get out of an automobile/aircraft.

The low-profile sheath facilitates movement, limits noise, and attaches to a belt or Molle vest (and of course the M-PAC Rack). The patented, integrated sharpener means edge retention in the field.

Price:
I bought my knife at Sportsman’s warehouse for about $95.00, since I have found the black and Tan versions online for about $60.00.

Common Features:
• Overall Length: 10.59"
• Length of Blade: 4.84"
• Weight: 11.39 oz.
• Blade Style: Single serration
• Blade Material: 12C27 Stainless Steel
• Handle Material: TPV over molded on nylon
• Handle designed to reduce shock absorption
• Low-profile sheath to minimize interference
• Sharpener is integrated into sheath
• Easily cuts through nylon straps and seat belts
• Made In USA
• Lifetime Warranty

Summary: An excellent multi-purpose knife at a good value, well worth the initial investment…should provide years of service.

Re: Gerber LMF II Review

nice, i just bought a new benchmade fixed blade the other day. it was between this knife and the SOG seal knife, but this one was just soo sexy. its out in the FJ right now, i can post up some pics of the real knife tomarrow. i keep a small cheap $40 fixed kershaw in the gat box in the drivers side dash. i am a certified knife freak btw. i love all folders, assisted/autos, fixed blades, etc...

I had the Gerber ASEK II for a while and I eaqualy have to say how great it is, truly rugged and dependable. You can usually get them for 60 ish, but the Foilage green always cost about 100.

My favorite feature is the thick ridge in the blade making usable for light prying and wedging. Great to open ammo crates, or molest a door, window frame.

Re: Gerber LMF II Review

I have the tan LMF II ASEK which has the add on seatbelt cutter and I always carry it in the FJ. Now it'll be easier to carry with the MOLLE rack! Definitely one of the best values in real all-around survival knives on the market right now.

Re: Gerber LMF II Review

This thread caught my eye and when I started checking out prices I found a couple of useful points;

The complete package with the knife, scabbard, safety tool and sheath is the "Gerber LMF II ASEK Survival Knife" Mfg. #22-01400 in tan/brown

Model #1400
LMF II A.S.E.K. Includes:
Knife / Sheath
Molle vest attachable sheath
Two straps for belt or leg
Safety Knife and sheath

The absolute best price so far in Coyote Brown at about $80 shipped to California

Gerber LMF II A.S.E.K - #22-01400 : Gerber Knives - at Rocky National

Gerber LMF II A.S.E.K - #22-01400 : Gerber Knives

For the all-green combo about $118 with Calif tax included
Gerber LMF II ASEK Knife Foliage Green

The knife and scabbard (only) are sold as the "Infantry" knife by a bunch of stores. Some may not say so very clearly but if it is priced below $75 bucks check closely to see what is included. You can even buy just a knife with no accessories at all.

Re: Gerber LMF II Review

I got my LMF II black model for about $80 last weekend at my local Sportsmans Warehouse.

It came with the legbands, molle straps, and the scabbard that has the built in sharpener.

It is a great knife, and has the end on it to break a vehicle window.
However I think I am going to get a Lifehammer for that, and mount it up front.

We aren't lucky enough to have the walk-in stores here and their on-line site does not have a catalog.

In Washington you can also walk into a gun store and buy a factory suppressed .22 pistol. Kalifornia? Fuhgettaboutit!

Re: Gerber LMF II Review

i guarantee that in an emergency, i will have something in my pocket that will break a window. i always carry my sog, usually have my surefire (you dont know how handy a flashlight is until you have one small enough to have with you all the time), or something else that i can breaka window with. i wouldnt waste money on a lifehammer. if you really want something, get a automatic center punch. its what the cops use to break windows.
