Re: Overhead map light install (lots of pics and details)

The GM light pretty much goes straight on-off. What some people had done was add an additional small on-off switch to the GM light to be able to control it when the door was opened.

Re: Overhead map light install (lots of pics and details)

I came to the party late... Is there any way to get a bracket? 1st gen or 2nd - either is good for me. I don't have metalworking tools or I'd just fab one myself - your directions were quite clear IMHO.

Thanks!

I am ready to do the mod also. Gather up everything except the bracket.
Would you have one more bracket? If not a drawing will do.

Re: Overhead map light install (lots of pics and details)

I finally got my overhead mod installed and here it is

I went with the 2004 Honda Odessy set up with Homelink. I decided to put it in this position because it looked closest to stock close to the mirror. I connected the lights and ran it fore and aft and really didn't notice much change in the shadowing. It does a nice job illuminating the ignition and cup holder, I am very happy with the increased light. It also lights up the upper glove box. I primarily installed this unit to get the Homelink, which works great. I had to fab a bracket off of the mirror. It fits very nice, only gapping slightly on the sides. The color match is almost perfect, gray according to the person I purchased it from on Ebay. Special thanks to Singha for providing the connector and wesayso and Swiss for the original idea and help.

The lights fade in and out just like stock. Here it is lit up.

Thanks Again, This Forum Rocks!

Looks nice, I have the same one.
Would you have an extra braket? I need one for my install.

I only made the bracket out of some household duct sheet metal I had laying around. It is pretty flimsy stuff, so I intended on using it as a template. After I finished, it was so secure I decided to go with it. The Bracket just covers the light section and the clips by the sunglass holder takes care of the rest. I just traced out the front and added a wide tab down and under the mirror. I also bent in a tab on either side to help push the ceiling down to the overhead. I still got a small gap, maybe 1/16", which would probably go away if I used stiffer metal. I also to cut out holes for the backs of those bulbs and the plug. I neglected to snap a picture prior to install. When I get a chance I'll try to drop the unit and get a shot.

Re: Overhead map light install (lots of pics and details)

I dropped the overhead and was able to get a few good shots of the bracket. It looks a bit crude, but it makes the unit nice and secure. I was able to almost eliminate the side gap by bending down on my side tabs some more. I also added foam tape to the top of the glasses part to firm it up.

The front end goes under the mirror:

Here is the end with the bends to push the headliner into place:

Here is the screws I used: I think a short #8 sheet metal

Make a template out of cardboard and fit it to the console. Once your happy with the fit , transfer it to the headliner and cut away. I made mine pretty snug. Good Luck.
