From the comfort of my armchair I wonder if it might have been easier to cut and replace the hog rings rather than the wire crossmembers? Clipping in new hog rings may have been easier than getting the wire pushed back through the old hog rings under tension. This approach would require hog ring pliers and a few hog rings, of course.
This is a great project for someone already installing a stereo amp under the drivers' seat.
To keep costs low, I wonder if one could drill a 3/4 inch hole in the center of one of the two rectangular switch blanks to the left of the steering column and mount the switch on there. Kind of a round peg in a square hole approach. Those switches are largely hidden by the steering column anyway. A hole that big might make the switch blank too weak to hold it perhaps.

For the first point, I think it might be true. Messing with the rings might be easier if you have the right tool. I just had a leatherman and it worked fine for me.
As for the second point, I'm working on drilling a hole in my blank switch now, to try exactly that. I might even cut it in half vertically, drill out the semicircles, and pop it into place. All I'd lose is a blank if it gets demolished.

This is the one. Carbon fiber inserts, apparently the only way to go. You can save money by buying a 2-pack, but like I said before, I'm not sure how it affects the passenger airbag detection system.
I went to Welcome to Heatmyseats.com. Click on the very first one, top left. It shows you the button as well. Exactly as advertised.
