With all of the GPS and NAV and whatnot, does anyone know how to read a map anymore? I realize that came off a little rude, but I didn't know how else to say it. I love the idea of a computer screen GPS/NAV setup like nycjuni but do you guys carry maps and a compass as a backup? I hate unfolding and folding and doing it all over again when I go out, but I do it because I have to. I have a personal electronics phobia! I get all panicky just thinking about getting a handheld GPS to talk to a home-based computer.

It would be great if I had a clue, but let's face it, that's just not gonna happen.
Ya I have paper maps to. The tablet PC are cool! More $. I can view my laptop just fine while underway. My mounts flex and I have extra padding under the laptop. I also have already cloned my HD (great point cow). I just like making things in my garage. Thank you all for your opinions and comments. That's what makes this forum a great place to share ideas.

I don't rely only on PC nav, I have maps as B/U. But, maps cannot record your route/track. Good for later use or backtracking.

I agree, but they need thinner and bigger displays. The best soultion as many have already suggested is to install an indash touchscreen for control of a remote pc (laptop) hidden away somewhere else in the vehicle. I had this in the past and loved the look and variety of options.
That's what I suggested... A laptop hidden as an alternative to the book size PC... BTW you can take the book PC out to review things at home.. Only takes a monitor.

These work, are sturdy, and bolt right to the seat mount.
They take about five minutes to install, can be mounted on a rear bolt for the passengers, have a quick disconnect option.
Mine came in today, $39 with the quick disconnect option + $13 shipping, will install it as soon as my FJ get back from the fab shop (new prototype parts being made) here's what you get:
I'll post installed pics when I get it in. I'll be mounting my Dell Inspiron 1000 that I'm using to type this post with for the project. BTW how do I clone my HD?

Laptop HD to IDE (desktop PC connector); Norton Ghost or other ghosting software - go by a smaller, service oriented PC shop.
You'll need to open up your desktop PC, etc.
Another option that might be available to you in your area - some shops will do it for a $25 or so fee.
If all of that is just too much of a pain, at a minimum get a USB hard drive and transfer all your important data onto it. They are very cheap now ... or a USB pen-type drive.... also much cheaper now.
Hard drives hate shock, vibration, and extreme cold/heat.
The key is when you hear that tap tap tap sound - very subtle sometimes - when you are starting up your notebook ... the timer is ticking and the hard drive will be toast in a few more hours of operation.
I have had laptops as media PCs in my vehicles for over a 1 year and had never had any shock problems. Remember that laptop hard drives are built for shock and mobility. Now if you drop the laptop from a few feet up and let it hit the ground that’s another topic.
Offroading is another story. I have seen rally and Baja trucks use mobile tablets and laptops for navigation, but then again they can afford to spend $$ on shock proofing sensitive equipment.
Touchscreen monitor in my dash connected to a dell latitude in the rear of the truck.

Very nice! Man I don't make enough money for that kind of luxury. Good stuff!
