Just to clarify for us non-HAM(yet) (hey! HAMyet! a new word!) folks, is a repeater a manned station, or is it an automated system set up by a private or governmental entity?

A repeater is an automated radio-relay system. It listens on X frequency, and transmits on Y frequency.
You setup your radio to transmit on X frequency (to the repeater) and listen on Y frequency. Repeaters are usually at very HIGH locations (such as Cheyenne Mtn here in Co Springs).
Most repeaters are set up by individuals or local ham clubs. The only "government" ham repeaters are for dedicated RACES, ARES or other emergency uses which are very few and far between any more. Mostly because clubs and individuals have covered almost all of the populated areas around the US

The local favorite repeater around here is on Mount Pilchuck (WB7VYA 146.920- oe 123) and it is also a RACES repeater.

If anyone interested in studying for their license needs a pretty good FREE resources, check these PDF files out:
Index of /newtech

That same site has a great repeater directory built into Google Maps:

Re: Reasons why CBers should consider HAM Radio

I have ben a ham since a teen, I also enjoy rag time on the CB, I know the limits of the cb and all the advantages of the Upper band ranges of the Ham frequencies. Not wanting to piss anyone off but teh CB is terribly limited in it's use as a communication tool, very limited range and lots of unregulated interference limits it severly. I run both a CB and a 2 Meter in the Jeep, I can get out v\long range in case of an emergency with the 2 meter, the cb is basicly line of site.

Lance you are comparing apples to oranges, unlawful use of trails damages trails and could kill wildlife. Money for permits goes to maintenance and to pay rangers that patrol it.
1. Me going on 2 -meter and belching isnt going to harm anything except maybe someones feelings.
2. I think the FCC has two people west of the Mississippi that even monitor or respond to violations.
This isnt the 1950 when you had to show couples on TV in separate beds, HAM needs to realise its modern times. Maybe if you let some guys like me have fun on a small band of 2 meter, HAM wouldnt be a dieing hobby, hardly any kids are interested anymore.
I was about to actually get me licence when we had 147.435 in LA. But the repeater was shut down by the ethics police. The only channel I found entertaining hurt the million parts of the other bandwidth i guess.
Hey Chatsworth 818 FJ... There are many Official Observers's monitoring the bands and reporting misuse to the FCC As has been very well explained by 1leglance and Wayne, radio bandwidth is a much sought after commodity by private companies. The ham bands are available to hams because they provide a very visible and reliable service. Check the congressional record and FCC committee meeting notes and you will see a value added to having the ham radio folks. But, no mention of Childrens Band... Go figure...

Re: Reasons why CBers should consider HAM Radio

Last week I completed the IS-100 training, this week I plan to complete the IS-200 training and I am half way through the ARRL EC-100 course.

Not only is there valuable info in these courses but the instructor led classes provide a good place to meet face to face with other HAMs

why did I decide to take these courses? because they are either required or highly recommended by the District 24 ARES group I joined.

Re: Reasons why CBers should consider HAM Radio

I realize that this thread has not had any traffic in quite a while, but after rereading the entire 11 pages I want to comment on a remark made that wasn't addressed regarding a repeater being shut down because some hams didn't like the tone of the guys having fun there.

What many repeater users don't know or realize is that whomevers callsign is on that repeater is responsible for it's use. That means that the repeater "trustee" for lack of a better title must ensure that the repeater is used in accordance with FCC regulations or the repeater trustee is liable for it's misuse.

So... any action taken by the trustee is appropriate to prevent misuse.

If a group wants to set up a repeater, buy the equipment, get a repeater pair of frequencies assigned by the state or regional frequency coordinator and then find a trustee be it a club callsign or individual. But, I'd bet that once that responsibility is assumed, behaviors on the repeater will be monitored and modified or use of it will be denied. And, yes the repeater trustee can deny use of the repeater!

cheers and 73,

dale de W5WI

Re: Reasons why CBers should consider HAM Radio

i have to say, my experience at the summit convinced me of two things

i need to get a CB (cause almost everyone had them)

and

HAM technology is SOOO much better than CB (each run i was on had at least 1 other HAM, at times more, and talking was so much clearer with them than listening to the CB chatter which i was able to do at times; and talking to HAMs on other trails - i.e. Imogene to Black Bear and the like was very cool)
