As to a group buy I would highly recommend Ham Radio Outlet and the Yaesu 7800 as it is a dual band readio with wide recieve that will really serve the majority of folks very well.
I know the HRO here in Phx has been positive about a group but when I ask in the past just looking to get some of my local folks here into it.
Figure right now on sale you are looking at
Yaesu 7800 $250 w/ free sep kit to remote mount faceplate
Antenna less than $100 w/ mount and cheaper can be found
I would recommend them also for anywhere in the US. I have always gotten nothing but excellent service from the Portland store. If you have questions or are trying to figure our how something can be done give your local HRO (HRO Ham Radio Outlet Worldwide Supplier of Amateur Radio Electronics Equipment) store a call they are always glad to help and are very knowledgeable HAMs, not just guys working retail.

Re: Reasons why CBers should consider HAM Radio
I've got a question for you guys - if I were to run coax cable for a CB antenna through my FJC, would I be able to use the same coax cable if I later upgraded to HAM, or would I have to string a different one?

Yes you can - in fact I do exactly that with mine. I use my HF antenna mount and swap to a 62" whip with an SO239 adapter for the CB. My VHF whip on the bandi mount on the other side is my 2m/multi-band mount. Both will be on coax switches when they arrive Friday.
I know - where's the pics, well I'm not completely set up yet so I'll post in my build thread when I'm done - hopefully no later then Sunday
sorry no one responded to you directly....it think it was covered elsewhere in this thread or another...
For cb get a good cb, for ham get a good ham....that will keep you legal and everyone around you happy.
The radios are small and the antennas can be also, running both is no big deal and you should to cover all the bases anyway.
So while you will be told it is possible to use 1 radio for both and if you search google you will see cb/ham combos from a real world standpoint on the trail just put the idea out of your head....diff freq, lic vs none, legal, and you will not be an outcast

Besides being illegal HF Ham rigs make very bad CB rigs even when highly modified and with a well educated operator. They are simply not designed for wide band AM tx. Some CBs also have SSB (single side band) capability but that is still on AM and most of your HAM frequencies are on FM.
So besides being illegal you're better of running CB on CB and Ham on Ham.
Depending up on license & equipment, you 'can' talk on CB frequencies. It is however, illegal
How come? I thought the licenses were supposed to cover a range of frequencies and rx power. Since CB doesn't even require a license, what stops you from using any piece of equip you see fit, as long as you keep inside the legal freqxpower range?
I've never looked this stuff up, so I may have gotten the whole principle wrong...
Bureacratic red tape BS. I am required to have a Radio Operators Lic for work because of that same BS, no test involved, just pay your fee sir... The ham test is mostly common sense questions. IMO you should be required to take a test for CB too. At the last Toyota meet I attended not 1 person had HAM and only 30% had CB's. I use CB because is more prevelant in Off-Roading.
This is a great discusion. Lots of great info. I've been considering a Ham radio for a while now, as well as a CB. I'll defentally be getting a CB first, but will look inot a HAM in the near future. Question. Where do i get a ham radio, and what are good brands? I know ICOMM is good, but are there others? How about price ranges?
