Hi I am puzzled as to why my battery light is on? The back story is I got lazy installing some aux reverse lights and wired them directly to the reverse light wire. I know I know bad idea. This blew the LG1? fuse. Which wiped out the temperature and compass, reverse lights, heater fan and I believe the charging of the vehicle. Well I reversed it and did it the rights way with a separate power relay and fuse. I replaced the fuse.
After unplugging the battery to clear the codes every thing now works except my battery light is on. My amp meter is still reading high and when checking the battery with a multi meter with the car off, the battery sits at 12.5 volts when I turn the car on it sits at 13.7 volts. To me this say the alternator is working fine. Also checking it with a battery charger/alternator checker it looks good.
Any idea why its on. I have only had one other alternator go and it went with no warning and just gave up the ghost nothing like this. Any help is appreciated.
Do you have access to a code scanner? That is pretty bizarre that your battery light is on? Is there a possibility your serpentine belt is loose (some how) Maybe check the wires going to your alternator....
in my experience, alternators seem to go out on FJ between 90 - 130,000 miles. When mine croaked the internals of it were seizing up and there was an actual oscillation visible in the belt between it and the next pulley it hit. They are not that hard to change (I have changed 6) The lower 14mm bolt for the alternator can be a drag to break loose. Five of them I have used my HiLift Jacks handle for the breaker bar.
Hey Cowboy thanks for the response. I will check the pully when I get a chance. All the wires look good. I checked with a code checker and no codes were coming up.
Same issue? You too?? You hooked up auxiliary reverse lights, blew the fuse, rewired it with a relay and you too are having a battery light?
Or maybe, your battery light came on and you want to know where to check first? Take a voltage reading with the engine off and also running with some electrical stuff on like the headlights...
Most all of the auto parts stores (at least here) have a little cart they will wheel out to your vehicle in the parking lot and they can test your battery and electrical charging system for free.
They do it complimentary for you hoping that you will buy a battery or alternator from them if they find out what is wrong. Use caution with them though, they are usually not really good mechanics or they would probably be some where turning wrenches for twice the money. Get a second opinion form another shop or a sears automotive center...
PS, now is a good time to check that you have good jumper cables in the truck, while it is still running.. If yo are driving along and strange stuff starts happening like the dash gauges start bouncing around, look for a place to coast to the side of the road pretty soon... it is my experience that, that is a good indication that your truck will be needing to take a nap soon.
