i did almost the exact thing with a nuvi 260w and a word of warning, while it looks great, without an external antenna like this setup, it takes 10 or more minutes to get a signal if i even get one. just a heads up. search "garmin question" for some pics and its easy to screw the suction mount to the rear view mirror plate....but an fyi on signal strength.....
My nuvi 650 works just great attached to the rearview mirror. Great reception, fast signal lock, and good accuracy. Frankly, I was (happily) surprised by this.
Here are a couple of shots of my nuvi 650 mount, inspired by landcruisersteve's original post. It's hardwired to the switched power available in the "mystery plug" found under the driver's side a-pillar cover.

Your specific model garmin also has a flip up antenna though right? Mine does not, I've searched long and hard for a solution, because I really like the install area. I put a repeater right behind it on the windshield, and an external antenna, but no luck, still takes WAY too long for a signal. Anyone have any suggestions???

BTW, I put my GF's exact same nuvi in my FJ as well, suctioned to the windshield and it got signal with no problem. So it has to be where I mounted it. it looks so nice, but it's driving me crazy.

Yep, that's exactly why mine is wired to a roof-top GPS antenna. Tucked up near the headliner like that, it would be difficult to get a consistent and clear line-of-sight signal from the satellites with merely the unit's built-in antenna.
BTW, if any of your GPS units have the Garmin type swivel antenna, that antenna is removable by orienting it into a specific swivel postion and simply pulling it out.
What you'll find is a BNC connector that the swivel antenna was attached to. This would be where you'd connect an external roof-top GPS antenna cable.
