Just wondering what location you find is the best place to mount a suction cup base type GPS. I was concerned about mounting it on the windshield because of the front curtain airbags.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
I put mine below the air vent next to the drivers window, on that silver blank space. Don't have a pic.
I used a RAM mount and placed it on the driver's side, just over the silver piece; which is already occupied by my kenwood d-700! This is a great place for my gps and I can see it just fine, and its not in the way. It sits just over my scangauge, which I have mounted above the vent. Yeah, makes for a busy corner, but it is functional and does not distract me too much on the road.
Rather than replacing the rear-view mirror (I use mine too much), I mounted my Garmin 276C above it.
No glare at all from the outside, minimally visible to GPS thieves from the exterior of the FJ, and as simple as glancing at the eye-level rear-view mirror to see the GPS screen. (Plus, it nicely fills in that gap between the sun visors to block out the sun when they're being used.)
I found on eBay a 9" stem with a base that fits into the cup holder closest the dashboard. Such an arrangement places my Nuvi GPS within reasonable view, out of sight of possible thieves, and within a short distance to the power plug.
I saw Steve's original post about mounting his GPS to his rearview mirror and it inspired me to mount my nuvi 650 in the same place. I basically did some dremel and drill work on the nuvi suction cup mount and piggybacked it on the existing mirror mount with some longer bolts from Home Depot.
I cut the cigarette lighter plug off the power cord and hard wired the nuvi to the unused connector in the driver's side a-pillar. That connector provides ignition switched power and ground, so the nuvi starts up and shuts down with the car.
This is a great setup - it's out of the way but easily visible and within (my) reach. The amazing thing is that the reception is still great with just the built-in antenna on the nuvi!
