I've only ever had to just tap the fillup option, the SG selects the right fuel amount itself.
How's the SG gonna know how many GLs you put in if you don't tell it? You must be resetting it everytime you fill up and that is not going to be accurate. By entering in how many GLs you put in to top off the tank is the way it figures out the consumption and MPG.
wasn't i part of the set up crew that day? hahahah but nah how about taking down full gas cans, spare, and whatever else in da trunk when driving to work and put them all back when wheeling? i know its aaaaa lot of work but i think u can save few mpg there. or maybe getting a econ box just for work and have the fj only for wheel. just a thought.
Learn what makes a difference. Coasting to lights, drafting in behind other traffic instead of leading the way. Staying somewhere near the speed limit, etc...
I am happy to get double digits on the freeway. If I go over 65, that's when I start hitting the high nines. However a friend with an F-350 tells me he is AVERAGING six.!! We are far from the worst out there.
As dvan says, drafting 18-wheelers is a good one. I have hit 20+ when drafting. Showing that the aerodynamics are probably the worst of any car out there. And the mods really drag it down. Tires are by far the worst. Many people think the roof racks are bad, but I think they're far less significant than the tires. Inflation pressure does not make a huge difference; being on my fourth set of FJ tires of every different shape and size, it's the size of the tire.
When going downhill I always put it in neutral. Even though I have an automatic, I downshift when slowing to save the brakes.
.I agree with NO Parrott head. Now myself I just have a stock 08 FJ no real build up tinted the windows to match. Bought it with the step ups, roof rack oh and that 160 dollar passanger arm rest option (you got to love that one I mean come on Toyota just include the thing and bump up the price by 160.) Anyway I am happy with mine I get my 17.5 MPGF city but I did not have a need to do a build up (lift kit big tires etc..) If I did or was into that I would have just chalked up the MPG as a cost to have fun. Heck I even looked at one of the off road models with the Billenstein (poor spelling prolly) shocks and all and turned away from that because I knew it would cost me a couple MPG and I would never use it. The only reason I got the 4X4 is I had it in my Jeep before I like to sit a little higher and mainly I never know where my job is going to take me so if I end up in CO next year with snow on the ground I would rather have 4X4 now and never need it but have it if and when something like that would happen then to not have it and wish I had when and if that would happen.
OK now that I have rambled on and on I guess what I am saying is take those readout units and either throw them out the window or do what I do with the timer on the eliptical machine at Bally's throw a towel over it. YOu like the lift kick you like the big nudders this brings enjoyment to your life but it comes at a cost so be it have fun.

4th set?!!!
I find I get more speed when I give it just a light pressure on the gas when going down hill. Might be better then neutral. Neutral can sometimes slow you down enough that you need to give it a good amount of gas to get back up to speed.

I had a GMC 2500 HD on 38" before i got the FJ and i think i use to get about 6 miles to the galon so 10/12 on the FJ is not bad but i always tought i was getting more, it can't be that bad.
wow, well after a coupla days of re learning how to drive I now get high 8's as avg. 2 MPG Less!! I might as well floor it like I used too. heheh. I still like the thing though, I'm thinking of making a huge fiberglass cone to attach to the front of the FJ with a clear peice of plexiglass from the tip of the hood to the top of the winshild moulding and then seeing the difference, It'll never happen but would be a fun mythbustersish type thing to do.
