I do this before I go on a trail. You end up with a bunch of points of interest instead of an actual track, but if you just draw the line in google earth, it'll make a ton of poi's so you'll end up with a line made out of poi's. Thats my answer for lack of being able to put in coordinates and make tracks for trail riding. Although, here in AZ, most of the popular trails are already labeled in the gps.
I own both the kenwood 7100 and Z1 (upgraded to a Z2) in different vehicles. The only saving grace of the kenwood 7100 is the SD card loadable POIs. While they are cool, they're not real easy to use. You'll see them on screen as little dots but they won't have any labels. Selecting them with the touchscreen usually takes several taps to get just right and the proximity alert seems to work on and off. In every other respect the Z2/Z1 is FAR superior. The navigation screen and controls are so much more intuitive and easy to use, the poi database is much better, the ability to mute just the nav but not the whole stereo is just a simple button on screen, and the overall gui setup is so much better. The 7100 feels like two units in one and basically is. You have your garmin or navigation side and your stereo side. The number of ways it switches screens and how all that works still confuses me at times in the 7100. The screens are more or less ugly as sin and poorly laid out. The Z1/Z2 is very well laid out and intuitive. It also has much better technology for the gps portion. It includes electronics to detect motion forces and direction. This makes a HUGE difference in accurately representing your movement on the map. It also has additional fun geeky screens you can use to watch directional g forces in your fj. The downside of the Z2/Z1 is price, requires a hard drive which some question for off road, is a bit harder to "bypass" motion lockout, and it won't let you load your own custom pois. While they are both good units, I highly encourage you to try these units locally before purchasing if you can. You'll instantly see what I mean between the designs of the two units.
I think I am sold on the Panasonic Strada CN-NVD905U, after reading the manual. It appears to be the only system I can enter POI by their coordinates. I also learned that it supports XM Satellite Radio with the XMD1000 Tuner. I Like the hard drive navigation, which allows you to freedom of not having to swap DVDs to change routes. I am sure I would break or scratch the Nav DVD, and then be screwed. You can also use the SD card to store Nav points. It has just about all the options I want.
Hopefully they will also support XM WX weather when it becomes available. At this point, I think it is the only feature that would make me think twice.
its hard to say the best when you forgot it on the list?
ALPINE!
Dude Alpine navs are overpriced IMO. You can get a great unit for like $500...such as the D3 right now. I didn't see anything I liked on the Alpine navs over the Pioneer anyway. Their single din units are great though.
