I just used the free version of Google Earth.
Here is an alternative to EarthBridge - not that there is anything wrong with EarthBridge, but I've been playing with both of them. goops
Here is the gps receiver that I'm using and it's working flawlessly and is getting strong signals from inside my house.
Hope that helps someone...I'm still in the infancy stages of this...
Todd again you get an A+. thanks for posting all this info in one place. The hardest part half the time in doing this kind of thing is finding all the info since it seems to be scattered all of the WWW. I will be going this route when I finish my projects.

Agreed!
Thanks very much Todd!
Now I gotta figure a way to make it convenient yet "out of the way"...
HEY Air2air quick question about your receiver. It looks like you are using Garmin 76 series as a receiver, and its connected via USB, how did you get it to communicate with the Earth Bridge other then just installing it? from what I have read so far, Garmin does not allow streaming live data via USB port connection.
Awesome! I have a spare Motion LE1600 slate tablet collecting dust too! Mind if I ask you to describe your mount in further detail for the tablet PC? ..
Also, do you not use the tablet functionality of the notebook anymore as evidenced by the mouse and keyboard?
The pen I just couldn't use vertically, and especially while moving. And though I picked a tablet for this job I think a laptop would be preferable because it's cheaper, and you get a keyboard and CD/DVD.

a coupla ?'s.
to zoom around in GE do I have to "stop" earthbridge?
Collins - yes, you have to stop Earth bridge. On GE, EB shows up on the bottom left "Layers" as a "Network Link". Just uncheck it.

also I don't seem to be able to start my route from my current location-can you guys?
It's supposed to start up and just follow you along as you drive.

are you guys plotting your route and then following it manually?
That's the way I do it. I have spent countless nights inputting coords from the trip books, then going into GE to draw the trails, then I take a thumb drive and transfer the trails on the car computer. My wife thinks I'm working.

I will eventually go this route and I was wondering what I need to buy.
John I would buy the cheapest, lightest laptop. It will get bumped around so be very simple and strong on your mounting method. Lots and lots of velcro works the best I've found.

What is the latest on hardware/software. Looks like this would be a good alternative when on a road trip. (Ouray) I would go back to my TOPO maps when in the outback. Nothing beats that.
Todd, you will have this for when I see you soon? Hope so, I can get the lowdown.
Nevadaesh I have plotted out our upcoming Death Valley trip here. I included your route, the campsites, and some of the standard POI's: Nevadaesh Death Valley Route

Todd, Looks like you have a Garmin 76cxs also. Is that what I saw?
We bought a Fujistu laptop because their hard drives have a anti shock feature and the keyboard is spill-resistant. Works great, though I think any laptop would work great.
I'll show you what we run when you catch up with us in DV. I like the look of the GE maps for when we would be on a long trip over highways.
By the way when I click on your links, I get only code.
See ya soon.

Yes, I have a 76cx but I understand Earthbridge will work with virtually all USB handhelds, and most of the serial ones.
Also somebody mentioned using the cache feature which will certainly come in handy in Death Valley if the cell reception is indeed nonexistent. This requires going over the route at high magnification before heading out, to cache the terrain images so you don't need a cell connecttion out there to download them.
