Re: Kenwood DNX 8120

Ok... I don't have the Topo maps yet. You have to buy the card and upload them. I called Garmin and they said you can use them with this unit, but you need to turn off the street maps... whatever that means. Sorry, I won't have pics of the topo maps for a bit. I was amazed by the detail even the normal maps had when I was wheeling. It had tiny two tracks that were covered in a foot of water....

It works fine with the subwoofer. No issues at all. I'm not sure what you are asking about the USB port. The iPod has an adapter cable that connects it in the glovebox...or wherever you mount it. The USB port is free to use what ever you want it for.

I'm adding a backup camera and Sat radio I think.

The install is actually pretty easy. I installed the DNX5120 (same class of unit, less features, smaller screen) in about 3 hours start to finish.

If you can solder and have patience, it's a pretty simple install.

The hardest part (for me) was running the antenna wires for the GPS and Sirius unit. I ran them out through the A-Pillar (needed new A-Pillar clips 5 @ .67 each).

I don't know if you have the subwoofer, but if you do how does it work with the DNX? I have heard that some aftermarket units ruin the functionality of the subwoofer.
Read this trouble shooting thread I did.
http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...-headunit.html

The mistake folks are making is the aftermarket radio wiring harness is color coded (and label) calling for power antenna lead to be joined with the vehicle specific harness. But since the Fj DOES NOT HAVE A POWER ANTENNA.
This is instead use to supply power turn on the sub. So if you follow the color code or harness instruction your sub will ONLY work when the radio is on. But if you supply the P-CON (from the aftermarket radio harness) to the Vehicle specific harness. Power is supplied to turn the sub on when the radio is turned on.

I really think the other thread with that info should be sticky.

On my Garmin handheld (60CSx) there are several kinds of maps you can load and it has some built in order/priority for which one gets displayed if you have more than one loaded. If I'm in a national park for instance I may have 4 different maps for the same area, three of which I loaded onto the unit: detailed road maps, detailed national park topos, less detailed national topos, and the unit's built in "basemap" of only major roads. The detailed road maps are what's displayed unless I go into the map setup menu and change them from "show" to "hide" -- then the next map down the list (one of the two topo maps) is displayed instead. When I'm out in the middle of nowhere I switch back and forth a lot, I wish Garmin made that a little easier than drilling down a few levels of menus.

I've looked at some nuvis and I couldn't find any similar menu. I've also looked as some Kenwoods in a local store but I can't seem to get any of the nav stuff to come up. So I'm not really sure how it works for these!

Re: Kenwood DNX 8120

I have the 8120 and pretty much every MapSource (Garmin mapping software) product. I will try to load some topo data tonight and let you know.

Subwoofer note: If you have the factory woofer in the factory harness it is as simple as wiring in the adapter and plugging into the existing factory harness.

Re: Kenwood DNX 8120

One thing I haven't been able to find out about these is what the traffic features are. (For some reason after driving through the LA area twice last week, and facing doing it again twice next week, this is on my mind.)

I see you can add XM traffic, but I'm not sure what features you get from that. On the nuvis there are I guess three traffic features, one is traffic alerts, one is showing traffic on the map, and finally automatic rerouting around traffic problems. For the Kenwood all I see mentioned are the traffic alerts. Anyone know the details?

Re: Kenwood DNX 8120

Should have posted here and linked from the 7100 thread but...

SpeshulEd had a good thread about hooking up your head unit to a laptop. It is basically the same for the 8120 but the 8120 has different features and access. I hooked up my 8120 to my laptop via a USB cable and the rest....

I loaded all my maps using the normal process of loading to the SD card from my laptop. It took 3 hours to render the image and I wasn't about to leave the FJ running to do that but they all work great.

The Topos look great

And I was even able to add the FJ Nav Marker

I think I may have to refine the srf file a bit. There seems to be some issues with the transparency but I'm tickled to get my FJ on the screen Especially since I called Kenwood and Garmin and both techs said I wouldn't be able to do it whadda they know

Can you provide some more detail on getting the Fj onto the Kenwood? I have the Kenwood KNA-G510 that is the pretty much the same system, takes the SD card.

Re: Kenwood DNX 8120

Also
Did you get the CD version of the 09 City Nav NT or the SD card version?

I was wondering if it was possible to get the CD version of the City Nav then put it on the SD card.
