Got a bit of a caution for the rest of you hackers out there. I had my POI files in the POI folder get corrupted!
The only thing i can think of is maybe I switched to a different screen or didn't let the POI load complete at some point. I've done so much on my 8120 I'm not exactly sure what did it.
The good news is I was able to fix it but it took a while. I ended up reformatting the "GARMIN" drive on the Kenwood and reinstalling all the files.
My 8120 had 3 folders on it. POI, Voice and Vehicles. I could not delete anything from the POI folder so I copied off the other two to my laptop hooked up in USB mode. Before I formatted the "drive" I checked all its parameters. It is a 2 gb drive formatted as FAT32. Then I reformatted the GARMIN drive as FAT32. FAT32 is very important so if you ever have to do this make sure it is FAT32.
Also make sure you can run everything on batteries for about an hour. I had my battery charger hooked up to the FJ because you have to have the Kenwood on obviously. I ran the laptop off of the power brick on an extension cord.
Why you ask - it takes about an hour to format a 2 gb "alien" drive as FAT32 from a USB connection.
So after the drive was formatted I copied the Vehicle and Voice folder/files back to the newly formatted drive and created a new POI folder.
I did leave most of the language files off except for English Jack & Jill and the default English file. I didn't see any reason to have all those languages on there I would never use and they are about 14 mb each and that opened up about 48 mb. Oh and I also deleted the "Offroad" vehicle. It is the Jeep
I also rebuilt the Blue FJ srf file because the one floating around dated 1/1/2008 has an error in it that creates a discoloration in a square around the FJ so I've linked
my new Blue_FJ.srf for anyone who wants it (right click - save target as).
Next you need to make sure you have the latest
POI Loader from Garmin. The latest version is 2.5.2.
Now after that little ordeal everything is working fine
I might recommend if you are adding/changing your POIs that you delete them all from the Kenwood before uploading new ones. That may save you from having to go through the ordeal that I wasn't really sure was going to work
Fortunately it worked and everything is working perfectly again
