Custom Radar Dector Mount

I got tired of using the SUCKtion cup mount for my radar detector so I figured I would try to fab one. So I got me some 22GA sheet metal from Lowes and started designing.

Originally this is what I had.

I wanted the mount to be semi permanent and to be bolted to the car using the rearview mirror. Unfortunately the amount of space between the sun visor when its pulled down and the rearview mirror did not leave much room for the radar detector. This was going to be a very tight fit so I was expecting to have to do a couple of mock ups to get exactly what I wanted.

Here is what I came up with.

When I tried it out it was a perfect fit. I was surprised I got it right on the first mockup. So I painted it and I also added two sections of heatshrink tubing to help tighten up the tolerances in the fit.

It's pretty sturdy so for now I'm going to keep this one for a while. Not sure how much different I can make the next one.

That must have been yours that got me thinking to do this one. Nice job. I actually need to modify my mount. After being on some dirt roads today it can get to flexy. So I'm going to take something like a 1/8 - 1/4 metal rod and use that to hammer a reinforcement grove like they do in pressed sheet metal. I'm hoping that will do the trick. Under normal circumstances its pretty sturdy.

I can’t take the credit for any of the threads here.. I have seen some floating around but I didn’t post anything on it.. Was going to wait to see if I come up with something different..
