I mounted mine on the rear view mirror. Attached to the mirror frame with 3M double side tape. I extended the ScanGuage II cable using a straight through RJ-45 coupler and a std. CAT5 network cable.
Did you need to buy the "extension cable" to mount your Scangauge up there ?

Re: ScanGauge Installed on Left Side of Dash
i am just bought one and i am planing on installing it just like you did but i like a more cleaner look....so what i will do is from my understanding there is a port in the back of the SG and i will pop out the silver piece and cut a hole so taht the cord could fit through so you wont be able to see the cord at all...

I had some left over from a trade show booth I worked on a little while ago. I think you can get it at True Value or Ace Hardware or in a pinch from Amazon:
I like your setup, but I can't find thats its clear behind where you drilled the hole. It's a hardplace to get at with your hand. How did you drill the hole, in steps or what? Thank Dan
I removed the silver trim piece before drilling the hole. As I recall, there wasn't anything tricky about it. It pivots up from the bottom and then pulls free at the vent opening.
Drilling the hole was easy once the piece was removed. Afterward, I routed the OBD II cable down to the connector under the dash and then snapped the trim piece back in place.
I was planning on putting the unit in the exact same location, but instead of routing the cable to the side and drilling a hole through the side of that silver panel, I was planning on drilling a hold directly on the face of the silver panel (since there is a 2nd input on the ScanGauge on the back of the ScanGauge unit) and having the cable run straight into the unit so no cables are showing.
What do you guys think? Only drawback, a hole on that panel, but the ScanGauge will cover that up.
Oh, and one question for you 23V: How does that silver panel come off? Does that piece snap off separately, or do you need to take off the entire dashboard?
