I was planning on putting the unit in the exact same location, but instead of routing the cable to the side and drilling a hole through the side of that silver panel, I was planning on drilling a hold directly on the face of the silver panel (since there is a 2nd input on the ScanGauge on the back of the ScanGauge unit) and having the cable run straight into the unit so no cables are showing.
What do you guys think? Only drawback, a hole on that panel, but the ScanGauge will cover that up.

I think your method of drilling a hole directly beneath the ScanGauge will definitely work -- just make sure you're really accurate with your measurements for the hole. The Ethernet connector will come straight out of the back of the ScanGauge without any wiggle room, so you want to make sure the hole is in the exact correct location up/down and left/right-wise.
I didn't go that route because I figure eventually I'll probably sell the FJ for something else (even another FJ

) and I'll take the ScanGauge with me. That would leave a big hole in a pretty visible location on the dash which wouldn't be too appealing for a future buyer. My location, with the hole on the side, won't be noticed at all. The hole looks like it came that way from the factory.

Oh, and one question for you 23V: How does that silver panel come off? Does that piece snap off separately, or do you need to take off the entire dashboard?

The silver trim panel is simple to remove by itself. It's held on by about four pressure connectors. You basically grab it at the bottom and pivot the bottom toward you (up) about 30 degrees. Then pull the whole piece upward at that same 30 degree angle. After you're done drilling the hole, it just pivots and snaps back in to reinstall.
