Just got mine done! Perfect directions. The only problem I had was getting the SWR set, plus I don't like that rubber grommet that holds the piece that connects to the handheld. Wish it had a stronger (bolt in) bracket, to hold it tighter.
My SWR readings were about 1.4. I really had to crank down on the antennae (where it connects to the bandi mount) to get it out of the red zone.
I thought of this today as I was looking at the antenna top. Is that top plastic cap gonna pull off if you drive under branches and whatever????? Anyone lose theirs yet? Should we glue them on or use black duct tape?
Ideas..........
Just a newbie's question to all the CB aficiandos - why a CB when FRS/GRMS handhelds are available?
Thanks.
CB has a couple things going for it:
Legacy: A lot of off-road rigs have been using CB well before FRS.
Range: CB runs at a higher power (4W vs. 0.5W) and at a lower frequency (27MHz vs 462-467MHz). More power is obviously good. The lower frequency lets the signal "bend" more around obstructions, so it is not quite "line-of-site" as FRS.
Here’s my alternate install location for the CB and remote box. I didn’t like the idea of installing the CB in the storage box because the box is always being used for other items when I’m driving and also you need to look down to grab the CB. I wanted something that was right in front of me.
NOTE: You will want to wrap the cord with fabric where is hits the plastic, the crappy silver paint wears off from the rubbing.
I used the small zip tie around the ring and a larger zip tie for hanging. I may at some point buy some wire and bend it to the exact shape I want, but for now this will do.
Location to mount remote box, metal housing for the brake pedal arm
The remote box mount with 2 zip ties zipped together around each side.
Now you need to wire the box to the FJ. Connect the positive to the mini fuse tap and plug into empty fuse slot in fuse panel.
To connect the ground, follow these steps.
Remove the kick panel along the door, pulls up.
Remove the dead pedal, slide your fingers behind the top, grab and pull towards you.
Turn the plastic screw that was under the dead pedal, towards the left, pop off panel on left.
The ground point is under the mess of wires.
Ground point (the bolt)
Attach a U connector to the neg wire, loosen the bolt, slide the connector under the bolt and tighten the bolt. If you do not have a U connector, snip a ring connector and bend it into a U.
Do you find your knees hitting it/knocking it off when you get in and out?
I actually haven't finished the install yet, I forgot to order the stud mount. So I can't do anything else until I get that part, hopefully Friday I'll get the part.
But I'm a small guy and I sat in the seat, I shouldn't get caught up on the wire getting in an out. The mount is very solid, it won't get knocked off. It takes seconds to connect the cb to the box and stick the mount to the dash.
