Dice iPod adapter and Samsung Helix install

Another Dice adapter install....
with a samsung Helix Xm2go radio installed on the Aux input via the Dice unit. installing it this way keeps the Stock Aux input.

not totally simple but well worth it.

Some observations...

1. Antenna (New micro XM antenna) installed in stock location on roof, cable is run down the drivers side windshield and then through the firewall (grommet pictured) the cable just pushs though easily on top of the single cable, not the bundle of wires in the center.

2. Disassembly - remove (in order) the radio, center console, lower center console (no need to remove the drivers dsah glove box)

3. the iPod is placed in the drivers side dash glove box with a 1/2 hole drilled in the side (nothing is behind this location and you can reach it via the radio hole once it is removed) i then installed a rubber grommet in the hole with the iPod to dice cable run through this. the grommet was free from www.niagracapsandplugs.com - just order free samples

4. power for the Helix unit is provided by a hardwired adapter from XM fans ($25 bucks or so) - this is simply tapped into the lighter sockets sandwiching the power wires under the lighter plugs in the rear

5. the dice unit is located behind the lower center console with double sided tape and tip ties - it is not in contact with metal or any thing else that can make noise.

6. the Helix is bolted to the center of the 2 blank switches in the lower center console - the spacing is perfect for the samsung car kit mount - drill and bolt it. install the entire assembly and your done.

7. there is not much you can do with the 3 wires that you need to hook up the helix (Pwr, audio, antenna) - these ar bundled and run between the lower center console and center console - i am planning on using heat srink tubing this weekend to clean up the look and painting the bolt heads black. minor details but....

8. Operation is not too bad considering the gyerations you have to go through to access the dice ipod unit and then the XM radio from the FJammer.

9. overall the sound quality if OK - not integrated quality but then again it does not have the $2K+ price tag either

10. i went with the Helix b/c it matched the interior better and i use it in my office and when we rent cars on the east coast (just got back form 2+ weeks in FL/VA/NC driving N to S).

shopping list
Dice FJ unit
grommet from niagra cap and plug (1/2" or smaller)
Helix or Inno with car kit
XM fans hardwire kit (5v - 2000ma)
2 small 1.5" bolts with washers and nuts
zip ties, 2 sided tape, etc.

Pictures

sorry i did not do install pictures but could do it again for someone in the area - figure 4 hours install for me the non-professional

Re: Dice iPod adapter and Samsung Helix install

pretty cool...does the helix get in the way of your switches?

Re: Dice iPod adapter and Samsung Helix install

the 2 on the middle left (Diff lock and AC Pwr) - yes but you can easily reach around or if you car wheeling remove the helix and it's holder.
