If you have any question about replacing the stock speakers...

I know this has been hashed, but I just experienced it for myself. Trash your stock speakers even if you plan on keeping the stock head unit. It is easy, inexpensive, and makes a TREMENDOUS difference. I have only had time to put in the dash speakers so far, but the difference is unbelievable. I lasted just over 4 weeks. I thought my hearing had finally gone, but it was the pos speakers. I am saving my pennies for an Alpine W200. I bought relatively sensitive JBL GTO series 4 inches for the dash and rear, and 6X9's for the doors. Many thanks to the forum for all the help. I used an allen wrench to get under the speaker grill and pull up. Here is the stock vs. JBL's:

What is the total cost (w/o labor) for all speakers? Do you still have OEM Sub? Did you change any wires? Thanks.

The dash/rear speakers are top end, high-fidelity compared to the door 6x9s.

From eBay, the 4's were $57 per pair delivered, the 6X9's were $77 delivered. I did the install myself. I cut off the stock wires from the stock speaker, soldered the wires to the JBL's and connected back to the original wiring. + and - was clear on the old and new speakers, so polarity was easy.

Re: If you have any question about replacing the stock speakers...

What about the doors, did you have to just unbolt the crappy ones from the housing they have in there, or did you have to do some cutting?

And the fronts and rears simply bolted right back in with no trouble?

I am ready to do mine soon.
I too am going with the W200 down the road.

Re: If you have any question about replacing the stock speakers...

I forgot to mention that I drilled out the 3 mounting posts that hold the conical part on the underside of the stock grill. You will probably have to drill new mounting holes for the speaker, but the 4 inch does fit under the grill. This post: Stereo install progress *update*, gives a very good explanation.

I have not done the doors yet, but did get adapters from tacotunes (via eBay) for the 6X9's.
