Tweeters in factory rear locations and midbass in rear seat - let the beating begin

I have a set of rear hole covers on the way - Thanks in advance to aleictgrant

I changed the title of this to spur some debate since everyone thinks I have lost my mind.

see note below in post 6 for all of you doubters.............

I have been wrong before - if I am wrong with this it only costs me a few bucks and I haven't drilled any holes in a $300 panel.

If I am right, it should look nice and sound better.

Original Post

All of you that have added rear speakers - please sell or give me your rear speaker hole covers. Please!! If donated to my system I will give you a credit in my pictures. I am willing to buy for a reasonable amount plus shipping. Please post or PM me with offers.

Thanks -
Steve

Re: I Need Rear Speaker Hole Covers from BASE FJ - Cheap

DEAL PENDING

To answer the questions I have received - Here is what I am up to:

I have mounted the mids of 5.25 JL Audio VR Components in the rear seat cutouts - but wanted to try to mount the tweeters in the panels of the rear speaker locations. I did not want to cut into the grills of the rear speaker covers - but also wanted to keep them in case my experiment did not work out. Since they are fill speakers anyways, I thought I would be able to preseve the imaging and raise the stage by shooting the tweeters up the sides of the FJ. I am disconnecting the roof speakers.

I will post a summary of the system with pictures in a few weeks (If I ever get finished)

Re: I Need Rear Speaker Hole Covers from BASE FJ - Cheap

not to be a prick but you are completely WRONG in your thinking. if you add rear speakers that brings back your sound stage thus losing depth to your soundstage. thus throwing your imaging out the fj rear window!

i had 2 8 inch rear fill in my demo car. i had to cut them 18 db using a lpad to achieve it. this still pulled my sound stage towards me just a tad. but it was also cut over (cant remember the freq)

your not going to get good imaging with a fj, the dash is to big and you have a monster center consol. you cant get long path lengths! if i were you at the stage your at! id go 5.1 or 4.1 and load up the power. have a dance club in your ride! im trying to give your positive criticism here.

shoot just read what you posted, if you seperate your mid from your tweet and move it clear accros town. your going to be sad, wont work that way.

Re: I Need Rear Speaker Hole Covers from BASE FJ - Cheap

the way i read it is the user is going to use a set of component speakers right. well the woofer per will go in the back doors or something like that and then the user was going to throw the tweets in the way far rear pillar locations. so he'd have components in 2 different zip codes. i say that in a fun/educational way. this is all with regards to imaging. It’s a great idea and if it is a experiment you’ll find out that running the speaker wire back and mounting the tweets, was a waste of time, because I don’t think you'll like it.

you don’t by a mustang cobra to put the ford escort engine in it do ya, no, keep the jl’s together and they will be happy for your ears

Re: I Need Rear Speaker Hole Covers from BASE FJ - Cheap

Oh, ye of little faith. The wires are already run and mids are installed. The problem with putting the tweeters in the rear seat is earbleed by my 2 & 5 y.o.

This is nothing more than cutting out the mid frequencies out of the factory rear speakers and moving the midbass behind the front seats. Since the higher frequencies are more directional (and aim-able) I think that it will provide better imaging than the factory setup - especially with disconnecting the roof "speakers". The rears will be cut 3-6 dB from the fronts anyway since I am driving them with 1/2 the power and will attenuate them with the EPX2 I am using.

Pearl - I scoped out 2-3 locations in the rear seat area that I can use if I do not like it. I figured it would be better to try this location forst, since I can replace the panel if I do not like the sound.

I have been doing this for 27+ years and I have had screwier things work out. It is an art as well as a science - let the mad scientist / artist have some fun.
