I don't have a FJ yet, but can tell you that I have a backup camera on my wife's car and it does get dirty in the bad weather but is still usable to make those reverse movements.
PFJ, you are supposed to mount the camera on the licence plate. Since the plate is not centred on the FJ, I am wondering how good a view you actually get.
JFERG - I was wondering the same thing? - Also wondering how good a picture it produces seeing as how it's wireless? Maybe you could mount it on the upper part on the inside of the rear glass to keep it clean.

Most of these camera systems will use a 3.6 ~ 4mm lens, which is a wide angle lens. The view should be ok providing the object is not a pole on the opposite side to the camera. My only concern would be to make sure the LCD screen actually mirrors the image. With the camera facing backwards, objects on your right would appear to be on your left to the LCD screen. Some cheaper systems do not mirror the image. No problem if your using simply as a back up camera, but if you have it on all the time to assist with lane changes, this can be quite confusing.

My wife's car (Prius) has the back-up camera, but only comes on when you put the car in reverse.
I never thought about the mirror effect. Never noticed in her car if anything is backasswards or not.
I have the license plate frame camera and love it. Works with the pioneer Z1 and I use it all the time. Esp when towing.

I put the VR3 on my FJ, satisfaction is so-so. It is wireless, yes, so there is some interference/distorted screen image. I mounted mine to my GoRhino hitch step, figuring if I was towing, I would not need the camera anyways, but at least it will be centered and down low. Not a lot of filth on the lense yet, but winter really still has to get here. I wired it up to a 4-pin trailer wiring plug and to the running light wire. It comes on when I turn my running lights on. Backing up? Just flip on the lights, it comes on. A nice feature of the VR3 is that with power off to the camera, the monitor goes dark. The problem, as you might have already guessed, is at night, driving with the lights on, I do have have to shut down the monitor so it does not distract me. Also, I do not use it all of the time. I always use the sensors but only the camera if I think it warrants it, i.e. parking lots with kids running around.

Went to look at one today....and maybe buy one....Spruce Grove store had 2 in both sold...they are expecting 65 on Tuesday...will go Wednesday nite to see them...West Edmonton Store had none left either.......I was thinking mounting it beside the high mounted brake light and then on my holiday trailer in the summer....$150 is what you would pay for a set of decent extension mirrors.

I was thinking the same thing.
Perhaps HOTumps can gives us his opinion on the camera after he views one. Can you post for us HOTumps?
Also used this unit. Mounted the display on the flat dash panel next to the driver's door. Camera in bumper cover between sensors. Main use, backing the Sea-Doo trailer down the boat ramp. Great unit for this purpose and available for $100 at Wally World.
Thanks to info available on this forum I wired it so that camera and monitor only come on when the FJ is in reverse.
