Aux Lights Wiring Problem

Okay,
I made myself a set of driving/fog light brackets ala FJ Dragon and Silverdusk. I went another step farther to Silverdusks' design and made the bracket accomodate 2 pair of lights, one fog and one driving.

I used hella 4000 compact drivings and hella 500 fogs.

I wired the driving lights up to the high beams and the fog lights to the low beams.

I then disconnected the DRLs so they would actually turn off by disconnecting the gray plug in the front.

When I turn on the high beams the driving lights come on.
When I turn on the low beams the fogs come on... Perfect.

But... When I turn everything off, all 4 lights come on. Not so perfect, in fact, very bad. There is no way of turning all the lights off. (And turning off the switch obviously works, but if I want to turn off all the lights, I want them to go off like they are supposed to, not by turning off my lights and then pushing a button.) I can't have the engine running and not have any lights. I believe they are kicking on when I release the parking brake, just like the DRL's would.

Any pointers, did I screw anything up? Any neat tricks I can do to fix this (without running additional relays?) And turning off the switch obviously works, but if I want to turn off all the lights, I want them to go off like they are supposed to, not by turning off my lights and then pushing a button.

HELP.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

One unforseen benefit is that I can turn on only my parking lights and turn the switch off for the driving lights and use only my fog lights. This way when it is really foggy or snowing heavily, I can still see without the glare from the regular lights.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

You say you wired the lights to the high and low beams but you don't say how. I connected the sensor wire from my PIAAs to the fuse in the engine bay for the left low beam and it worked perfectly.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

Sounds like they are getting their 12v from somewhere else, maybe the aux switch. Try disconnecting wires to find out. Not knowing exactly how you wired things up, at this point, I would say you may need to install high current diodes inline with the +12v on the switch and headlight switch to prevent this. Diodes are like one-way flow valves but only for electricity, probably need one that would handle about 120watts (10 amps).

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

It sounds like either your using the fog light switch for the coil or have it connected to N/C terminal or both. Try using your headlight tap to operate the coil and use the Fog light switch to the N/O terminal feeding through to the lights.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

Using the Hella relay (85,86,87,30). I tapped into the wire harnesses near the headlights for the signals, which feeds to the switch and then back to the relay. Power from the battery, and ground to the same plug as the battery ground was connected to on the fender. Sorry for any confusion, I didn't do anything out of the ordinary.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

Did you use 1 relay for all 4 lights?
Supply a diagram of how you wired your relay.
You may have it inproperly configured.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

2 relays. One for each set, bosch type relays. One wired to the low beams (fog) and one wired to the high beams (driving) both are tapped in right near the headlight bulb, right behind the harness.

I'm fairly certain that they are wired properly, I beleive the problem exists that there must be some low current voltage that is still being applied via the drls' (as they both kick on as soon as I put the handbrake down) but the DRLs no longer kick on (because I disconnected the gray plug near the fender) The odd thing is that it overrides it as soon as I put either high or low beam on and it even uses the proper set of extra lights (as I have it wired to), but as soon as I turn my headlights off, both sets kick on again. Odd.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

I bet that the +12v that you are using to power the relays and/or the lights themselves are feeding back to the FJ light circuit. Yeah, if you could draw a pic (hand-drawn then scan it?) that would go a long way to helping. Or just drive it here and I will fix it for you.

Re: Aux Lights Wiring Problem

Fuse taps are just bad practice. if that was my rig I would get 12v straight
from the batt, or one of the 12 heavy gauge wires under the drivers side dash. if you plan to keep the fuse taps at least diode isolate your circuit.
hope this helps.
