Talking Garmin Nuvi 660 Navigation First User

Well, an otherwise gloomy day weather wise was a little cheerier when the 660 showed up. I've never had a Garmin unit before today. First impression is very good. The thing that blew my doors is that the thing actually figured out where I was .... INSIDE my house!! Sensitive little bugger.

Not really sure where I'll mount it yet, so it is not hardwired/setup yet.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 660 Navigation First User

Thanks for the photos Noisy, I haven't seen one yet but am interested. I've owned other Garmin GPS units and they've all been great for their time. Looking to upgrade with a bigger, color display now. Does the 660 have external hookups for a laptop and an external antenna?

Thanks -

Yes, USB - putting pics and music on it right now :0, and updates. You can use a ext antenna, but I don't think this thing needs one - if it can work in my KITCHEN . It also has an ext mic port. You can be listening to an FM station and this thing will yap at you over your stereo.

I had an Eclipse AVN - very nice unit - but this is much easier to use.

Unfortunately, it is not linkable to my LG Chocolate phone, but I am sure they'll get an update for it. The thing is just too new.

Now I can watch music videos, have Nav running, the radar detector bleeping, shifting the MT6, pounding bass .... and still drive SAFE.

I put a 1-gig flash disk into it also.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 660 Navigation First User

I had the little brother to 660 before my indash NAV unit. The only difference is the screen size and the bluetooth. (it was the 550)

It has the best NAV engine I have seen. Very intuitive interface as well.

I have a 550 for sale (perfect condition).

The nav on my eclipse 6600 is pathetic. I drove to cedar point and it said I had arrived 30 miles out of sandusky on catawba island. What a joke. I bought it for the iPod support. Which is killer.

Would have kept my 550 if it has ipod support.

Does the 660 have an FM trasmitter so you dont have to have wires?

I think the most current firmware upgrade only supports 1000 MP3s.

Looks nice.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 660 Navigation First User

Not to long ago I got the street pilot 2720. This also a good unit. I have had several but this is the most advanced (talks and has a touch screen)

The only thing I did not like is it needs switched power (no batterys) that being said I hardwired it. I went in behind the trim to the right of the radio and stile power from the cigerette lighter. I had to take a small round file and make a small notch in the dash so the wire would fit. (don't worry) with the trim peice in place you cant see, and it looks pretty good (If you don't make the notch the trim will nit fit back in.

Re: Garmin Nuvi 660 Navigation First User

What about the Garmin Navigation for the Kenwoods units? Supposed to be able to upgrade maps, custom pois imports, Weather and traffic, can hook up with laptop. Any experience. I would not see why you could not load TOPO maps with SD CARD. All indash. I am not a big fan of Kenwood but with the navigatoin I could change my mind! Thanks
