I guess I can see a point to them in the city, but on highway or freeway jaunts, I find it really annoying. Half the time I have to look away from the oncoming car because the lights are just too damned bright. Maybe they might even be beneficial on crowded freeways, but not wide open spaces with little traffic. I'd never use them, but I would also want the option to turn them on or off.
Remember my sign-on is for the movie Tombstone and some of the classic lines. I'm not in law enforcement, I'm an engineer (absent minded according to my wife).
With that said, I don't drive with running lights, I drive with full beam (not high beam) all the time. I am convinced that a well intentioned driver may look both ways and not see your car, but car and lights increase the chance he will notice you.
You will always have the driver that is a jerk and pulls out to get in front of you, but the good drivers only do so when they make a mistake. One final note the glare may be prominent in the direction you are coming from. With lights on the guy about to pull out will see something he would miss without lights. Lecture over.
Thanks dad I will try not to forget.....I guess

I like them on public roads, but I want to be able to turn them off when hunting. Sneaking in and out of hunting grounds is important, obviously headlights make you abit more conspicuous
DRL's are for one a few things. None are saftey issues.
1 - They are listed as "Standard Options" (never got that one, how can it be standard and optional at the same time?). Just one more thing to put on the sheet for sales purposes.
2 - To sell more light bulbs. I don't know how often I see vehicles going down the road with just one DRL on. Pay attention some time, you'll be amazed how many there are.
One more thing. As a motorcyclist, I wish they would keep DRL's away from cars. This was one more thing that made motorcycles stick out in traffic. Now they just get lost in a sea of DRL's.
Thanks for the input. I agree that they would be more useful in the city environment where there are more idiots per sq. mile. In the wide open country setting I'd rather not have them. I like to be in control of my vehicle. If I want headlights on, then I'll turn them on. IF I want to do 90 down a 2 lane at night without headlights, that's my choice. One of the things that has always impressed me about Toyota's is that they put the driver in control, not the car. Take the HVAC system. If I want to defrost the windshield only with outside air not running through the AC, I can. Or I can blow hot air from the inside, through the AC and only out the middle vents.
I guess I'll just have to look at the schematic when I get my FJ.
Note: I asked my salesman about the switch everyone was talking about. He said it was indeed to turn off the curtain airbags.
I'm still confused about an on-off switch for the air curtains. There was a blue FJC at the Kansas City Auto Show that listed the air curtains on the option sheet, but when I looked for the off switch on the dash it wasn't there.
Well, I got the info from a salesman. So, far they haven't known anything! Well, yeah. Anything at all about these trucks. I've gotten all my reliable information from this website.
DDL are law in Canada, so that kind of removes my need to obsess. We've had them since the mid 1980s so almost all vehicles have them.
Never been blinded by them in daylight. How could you? They're weaker than low beams & your eyes are adjusted.
I like them, particularly on the highway. When you are going to pass, it's easy to see if the car in the other lane is going your way or not. Works the other way too, of course, when others go to pass they see you coming.
Headlights last just as long now as before.
