Just did the first method and it works perfect! No side effects.
One hint that helped me- before you try to disconnect it, slide the connector to the right so it slides off the little bracket. Then you can turn it and lift it a little so you can get to it easier and actually see the tab you have to press to get it to disconnect. (you can slide the one half back on when you are done) Made it real easy.
This only works if you have regular xenon bulbs. I installed my HIDs and now the passenger side light turns on after you disengage the ebrake. Really strange. Anyone know how to completely disable the DRL?
Big Bill25 is correct - the driving lights come on only when the parking brake is released all the way. Pulling the brake back on doesn't turn them off though (dumb)! GM Made trucks this way forever so the military could push the parking brake just one notch and turn off the lights at night without truely engaging the brakes. I'm going to venture a guess that you can let the parking brake off 95% and drive around without DRL's and not hurt a thing.
Just to add a little life to a very long thread, here's two reasons why I'd turn them off (temporarily)
1. I used to be in the habit of flashing my lights off twice to tell a passing big-rig that it was okay to get in my lane. Truckers like that, it's a bit friendlier than flashing hi-beams. With DRL's I click my lights off but they stay on. Now at night, I'll be able to communicate with my lights again.
2. When spashing thru mud alot I'll turn them off. I've noticed that since they are always on, they are hot. So they get coated quick when muddy water spashes them. The mud can cake on pretty good too, layer after layer. A few times I've gone thru some elbow geease and a spare t-shirt cleaning my headlights off before driving home.
Besides that, I'll leave them on for safety. I lost the last vehicle I had because an idiot driver hit me.

John.
x2. I'm sure I said it somewhere in this post, but I continue to drive with my lights on for safety, but want the option to turn them off for many reasons. Those two are good ones. I also like to turn them off when pulling in a driveway in the late at night hours so as not to have my lights blasting into a house with sleeping people in it. ...idling outside in the winter with the heater on looking at the stars. etc etc etc.

You are also the idiot that kills the family of 6 coming home from a day in the country and you survive without a scratch.
Little miss nanny state. Maybe dumb ****s like you should just shut the **** up and let us thinking individuals make up our own minds for ourselves. Please go move to Russia!
