I am interested in remote start for my FJ. I don't care much about alarms or other such fun stuff. Has anyone installed such a thing? I would like to do the install myself if possible. So, the more basic, the better. If a remote only doesn't exist, what's the best system for an FJ these days?

compustar is the best, plain and simple. why wouldnt you opt to go with an alarm at the same time though? i wouldnt install it yourself if you dont have any experience with them as well. if you truely want a remote start only, then i think it is the CM1000 from compustar. thats what you'll want.
I just finished installing my Clifford Matrix 3.5 Responder with Auto Start. I took my time and did it working on and off over two days, so don't ask me how long because I am not sure. Maybe 6 hours of so (man I have slowed down). I used to install car alarms, car audio, and cell phones for about 11 years and there are a few things I will caution you about. You may want to bring them up with the installer.
1) There are two Starter wires at the ignition key/switch, BOTH must be used to avoid the dreaded warning light problem others have described when auto starts have been installed. Most auto start/alarms support only one starter wire, in the case of the FJC an additional relay must be used. This must be done or it will not function correctly.
2) The best location to grab the tachometer wire is behind the gauges under the drivers side glove box/pocket. Door trigger is here also. Note: this is also a good out of the way place for the alarm brain and electronics and easily accessible if needed for service (trust me theives won't look there).
3) The dome light supervison wire requires some skill to tap. It is located at the fuse box (driver dash underside), but it is a flat ribbon cable with three wires. The wire that needs to be energized is the center wire, so some careful cutting with a razor blade is needed.
4) The crank time for the auto start will need to be adjusted on most alarms. Mine came default with 0.6 second crank time and it was not enough. I reprogrammed it for 1.2 seconds cranking and works like a charm. Fires up every time and does not overdrive the starter.
Note: I would not recommend this task to a beginner. Seek out a well respected professional for an auto start install.
Here is the wire color code for the FJC:
