Question Suggestions for Amp and Wiring Placement

Hello,

First post here.. I have some experience with installing boxes, subs, amps and decks. I had a 99 tacoma that was sort of a beater so I didnt really care about the visual quality of the wiring to an amp.

Obviously, I've got an FJ now and I am transplanting some audio equipment into it. I have a 10" sub and box, and a sony xplod amp.

Im curious about where people have been mounting their amps and how they are running the wires from their decks.

Im comfortable taking the dash apart to install the new deck, but Im thinking i might just take it in for a pro install for the rest. Should I worry about a pro installer not being familiar with the FJ?

Thanks

Re: Suggestions for Amp and Wiring Placement

I'll take a crack at this first.

Amp placement - most are sticking under seats or mounting in rear area (trays mounted to panels, etc.). for under seats, you'll likely lose your vent under there, and you've got to watch your dimensions.

Wires are either down the center console or along the sills. Avoid having power run close to anything else, and if you do, aim for a perpindicular cross over.

Don't worry about installer knowing or not knowing the FJ. If they know what they are doing, it will be fine. The FJ is a very open platform for audio wiring.

Re: Suggestions for Amp and Wiring Placement

you can fit a bigger amp under the drivers seat than you can the passenger seat. the seats come out very easily, thanks to the door set up. 4 bolts and a couple of plugs for the airbag sensors. after the seats are out you can pull the console out. you have to be careful with it though, it can get tricky up under the dash mounted buttons. the door sills come off easily, just lift and pull, and then you can take off the kick panels, if needed. the drivers side footrest pulls straight out, and each kick panel has a plastic nut you unscrew, and just push back on later. I was amazed at how easy and quickly you can strip the interior of these trucks. this is what I did with mine......

stereo finally done
