Stock Sub revisited..

Since the purchase of my FJ, the one thing I totally regret is not buying the package that included the stock sub.............For those that have it I'm jealous, has anyonethat has the stock sub, changed out the stock speaker from the factory sub-box, and added an upgraded speaker? Please I would like to know, before I decide on my next purchase(s)......Pictures would be nice to see how you did it and what possible instructions you have in doing it...I did do research on where you can purchase the Sub speakers, besides ebay. Here is the website:DiscountToyotaParts.
And if anyone is interested here is the part numbers: speaker-sub #86150-35100, covermount #86168-35020, switch #86171-35010. I'm assuming that you must purchase all these parts to make it a complete set-up. No wiring is needed since all FJ's are already pre-wired.

Wow, $806.90 for those parts. Make me an offer for mine.

Funny thing is they only charge $60 extra to upgrade from from UP1 to UP2, and the only difference is the sub.

Re: Stock Sub revisited..

I don't have the subwoofer, either.
However, from what I've read here, the only thing worth keeping (maybe) is the enclosure. The rest isn't worth much.
The people that get good results often throw away the stock sub and amp, install a new sub into the enclosure, and run bigger gauge wire to power the new sub amp. They say the stock sub amp wiring is really small gauge.
IMO, if I were going your route, I'd only buy the enclosure, and maybe the switch.

I missed out on the deal of the year, someone had it on ebay and it went for 375.00, my bid was 350.00...........I was at work when it finished......still kicking my ass on that one. How does yours sound, are you thinking about doing any changes? 400.00 my offer.

Yep, when I was at the dealer I really wanted the FJ that day, they only had 1 silver and it didnt have the up2........Damn.

Re: Stock Sub revisited..

I'm really happy with my sub for the $60 upgrade price difference when you purchase the FJ, but there is no way I'd spend $806 on it. Unless you just have to have the factory look, just buy one of the boxes available online here and get a nice amp and you're good to go. (and are way ahead of the game with regard to sound and response)

Howzit, Fixxer...........I'm actually a local boy from Hawaii myself, Hawaii Kai side, but I migrated to the Vegas as many other hawaiians have done. I think your right, on that, but I dont know where you can purchase the enclosure. I really do like the look........If you know give me some information.

Re: Stock Sub revisited..

By the way, I have no idea why they put a switch in for the subwoofer. I see absolutely no point in turning it on and off.

Yes, I have seen the enclosures from a few of the venders here. But there are not as many to choose from. Prices on them seem reasonable (399-599) but thats only the enclosure itself, then you have to buy the speaker and the amp, not to mention finding a place to install your amp, and im not really a pro at installing an amp. But you are correct that it would seem to be the best way to go.

Re: Stock Sub revisited..

I understand wanting to use factory parts...they just fit better becuase they were designed to go there. Mounting aftermarket stereo stuff (especially an amp) can be a real PITA. I just hate that they really hose you for the factory stuff. There is a thread on here somewhere about adding a different speaker to the factory box...and some other factory box mods.
