Whining speakers

I went through a series of upgrades to my stereo system doing it in stages. HU install with xm (1st) 2nd (removing all speakers exc. exciters in ceiling) 3rd (Door speaker install) 4th (Dash and rear speaker install) On the last stage I developed a problem which was a popping sound happening in the rear speakers when I turn the FJ on. Then also there is a constant hissing sound coming from them until I turn the volume up. I installed a pioneer 4800 HU along with xm around a week ago. (no hissing sound in speakers) Then a few days later I installed 6.5's in the door. (no hissing) Then today I put in 1' tweeters and 3.5's in the rear pillars. Then the hissing developed. Also, they seem to pop once when the radio is turned on. On the rear speakers I just used the toyota wiring harness and bass blockers so I assume there is no ground problem. The tweeters I did have to do some wiring considering the wiring harness suggested on here didnt fit the front. So, I was wondering if maybe the HU cant produce enough power? But then it seems it would go through all the speakers not just the rear. Speakers used 6.5's Polk 650's(92db), Polk 1' tweeters(92db), rear 3.5 infinity reference 3012 cf(90db). Overall the system is a major upgrade but the whining is getting annoying. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Re: Whining speakers

I am not a stereo expert by any means, but that is an easy one. Just install an isolation transformer/noise reducer on the RCA cables. About $20.00. That will get rid of 99% of the hum most of the time.

Re: Whining speakers

You have speaker hum with no amp? Hmm. Sounds like a grounding problem - again I am not a stereo expert - and from what you are saying maybe not. Most of these isolation transformers/noise reducers are RCA female-female in/out. I guess if you could put it in-line it is worth a try.

When I looked at Radio Shack about a year ago for something to reduce speaker hiss/hum they had something that installed on the speaker leads themselves near the speakers - not RCA, but just tinned ends - I'd see if that is still around. Sorry wish I knew more about stereos to help you.

Re: Whining speakers

I have to agree with Noisy. I am not an expert either, but the only time I have ever gotten a speaker whining is when I have had an amp installed. Generally, re-routing some of the wiring takes care of the problem. The new wiring that you ran...where did you run it, how long is it and what gauge wire did you use? Could be wiring issue but this would normally sound like a ground issue.

Re: Whining speakers

Yep the isolator corrected the problem. I don't have an amp yet but I do have the XM tuner. So, I had to install the isolator between the tuner and the radio.
