High pitch whine

I noticed yesterday that there is a high-pitched whining sound coming from inside the dash. It's hard to pin down, but it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side. Anybody noticed this before?

I installed the VR3 backup camera on Saturday, but I don't see why this would cause a sound like this. I turned off the stereo...still there. Turned off the climate control...still there. Unplugged the backup camera monitor...still there. Even turned off the engine (with key in acc/on position)...still there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...the noise is driving me crazy.

I didn't even touch the front end, other than to plug the monitor into the cigarette lighter. The sound is there with nothing running, not even the motor.

Re: High pitch whine

Something, somehow interfering with the backup sensor causing it to be on all the time? Did you mess with any wiring in the rear bumper that may have affected the backup sensor?

Re: High pitch whine

Just out of curiosity
Pull the fuse for the blower motor....see if it goes away.
That fan runs almost all the time (except when key is completely off).
If thats not it then try another fuse...isolate what electrical item is causing the whine.(if its electrical)

Do a search. A few months back people were complaining of a high pitch whine/sound. I do not remember what it was but the answer is somewhere in the forum. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Re: High pitch whine

It's the silver ECU box mounted below the glovebox on the right side. Some people have the whine and/or can hear it, some people don't have it and/or can't hear it. The only solution I have seen is that one guy wrapped his with some vinyl scrap and managed to attenuate the noise.

Edit - Here's the earlier thread: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...ighlight=noise

Re: High pitch whine

Many of us have this problem. Some people can't hear it because it's so high that it's right on the edge of hearing. It's coming from the ecu under the dash on the passenger side. You'll hear it with the key in the ON position (and maybe in ACC position, I don't remember now). I keep meaning to have the dealer check it out but I haven't gotten around to it. I haven't heard of a solution yet, unless I missed the post.

EDIT: Yeah, what Couver said. We were typing at the same time. I put a piece of cardboard over it and it may have helped a tiny bit. Need to find a sound absorbing material.
