I'm trying to decide if I take the plunge and upgrade the FJammer to something with a screen. I'm mainly hesitant because I actually prefer the garmin GPS on the dash to having to look down at the screen all the time. But what I don't like about the FJammer is that it doesn't support RDS, and the screen isn't very informative. I'm not going to watch movies on the thing, I'm not going to play DVDs, I'm not going to use the navigation, but I would love a great ipod interface and a great satellite interface. I'm also worried that if I upgrade the stereo, I have to now upgrade all of the speakers....sigh.
No matter what, it looks like I'm going to have to blow a grand on a radio.
Hmmm - looked around today. Seems any head unit I get will not work with the sub -- is this true? It seems no matter how I slice it, I'm a good $2K in with a new stereo once you are forced to upgrade everything to support it.

Ding, ding, ding. I started out just wanting to add a navi HU and walked away with what I have now! Full blown custom. Things seem to have a mind all there own! You won't regret it drop the 2 grand and you can sell the FJammer and subwoofer on ebay to offset the cost of the new system.

Great radio, with superior IPOD integration: $300-350 (max)
IPOD adap+sat radio of your choice+steering wheel interface+parts: $200 (max)
Install: $200 (max)
So..... for $700 (max), and $500 with a slightly more basic set-up you can have a new radio, with awesome Ipod/Sat/Aux/MP3 etc etc
Don't have to go crazy or touch the rest.
Will it give you a significant upgrade to the sound system? No. You would need amps and speakers and all that jazz to make that happen ($1500-2000 is fair)
Will it give you a ton of functionality at a reasonable price? Yes.

I have the very basic radio, no subwoofer or rear speakers. I was wondering how much it would cost to add these additional speakers for a somewhat fuller sound. And if I do add the subwoofer and rears, should I then also upgrade the exisitng front speakers?
The FJ is new but a 3 year lease so I don't want to push the envelope too far, just make it groovey and fun to play with. it'd the biggest toy I've ever owned,a real Tonka Toy. I leased a very basic model and just want to tweak it a bit to increase the functionability and fun. Aleady bought rubber matts all around, including the read deck, neoprene front seat covers & a replacement chrome TRD tip for the exaust.
But I'm into a sound upgrade rather then off road stuff and was wondering what my radio system options are and what they will cost.
Thanks for the advice and taking the time sharing it, it's apprecated

if you lease and DON'T plan on purchasing after your term, don't bother with an upgrade, it is money you will never recoup, and you certainly won't get a credit from toyota for adding it. even if you have second thoughts later on, better to save your $$$ now and if you decide to purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease term, then grab a new stereo.
and like anything else, you can spend as much or as little on sound that you want. I added a $2k system to my FJ and have no regrets. Some here have spent much more, and much less to get results they are happy with.

High cost is only 1/2 true. Stereo is based on how much you do yourself, where you buy crap, and how much you pay for someone else to do.
A new deck is the most. Anywhere from 100.00-1000.00+. The rest can be had for around the 500.00 mark (IE: 6 speakers, and a sub+amp. Dual subs and amps go up alot.)
I personally let NOONE touch my wiring. It doesn't matter who they are, they do not build to my standards. I would install the deck myself, super easy, at no cost except an adapter (15.00). Speakers are 4 screws and 2 wires, unless you run new wiring. Sub boxes are easy to build, and I would rather practice some fiberglass then pay to have it done (I haven't done alot of glasswork, but it's easy to do, once you know how....and CHEAP).
A little creativity goes a long way. And audio can be done little by little...it does not have to be done all at once!
Here is an example of some MDF and a little planning and time (not an FJ, obviously). The boxes tuck into the side of the bed, and fit around the gas filler neck.
