Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

sooo, i hooked up my xbox to my pioneer avic-d3 on the av1 input.. i didnt buy my FJ with the a/c plug in the back of the rig so im trying to just get a simple d/c to a/c power inverter to give the xbox some juice when the passenger gets bored.... i read that the xbox pushes out about 70w so i got the 75w inverter, aaand it obviously isnt working. makes a buzzing sound when its plugged in and creates lines in the screen.

the next size up was a 150w converter.. now i know the d/c outlet is 120w max, but would this 150w converter work and only use the 120 max? or would it just crap out? any help would be most appreciated, xbox in the car is a MUST.

Re: Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

The 150W is just the rating. You are free to use only 20W, 30W, or whatever or more, up to the 150W, although a quick rule of thumb for safety is stick to 80% of max. The device that is plugged into the invertor will determine how much power it draws. Now, I am not sure about the Xbox, but some devices take their timing, or sync signal off the AC line, and seeing as invertors can introduce terrible noise on the AC, you may have an issue. Some invertors are better than others at producing a clean signal.

Re: Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

Don't know if this helps.

Ohm's law... V * A= W

Volts times amps equals watts. Or watts divided by amps = volts, or watts divided by volts = amps

Use this to figure fuse size minimum for things like lights. Two 55w lights, 110 watts total at 12V =9.2 amps.

So in theory a 110v inverter putting out 75W should put out.7A But it would take 6.25A @ 12 vo;ts.

Confusing myself, time for my last beer for a while. back on the pager for a week starting in the AM

Re: Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

correction!!!!!

I was stating Watts law, not ohms law. Ohms law is used for calculations of resistance.

Got ahead of myself there.
Thanks for not jumping on me too hard there!

Re: Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

In regards to invertors, look for pure sine wave inverters over modified sine wave inverters. As pure sine wave inverters have very low distortion due to introduced harmonics, (unwanted frequencies as a result of producing a modified sine wave). Some laptop computers or game systems will not run with modified sine wave inverters, due again to clocking issues and introduced harmonics.

As for brand recommendations, I do not have any at this moment, but starting with pure sine wave inverters is a good step.

Re: Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

Think of an Xbox as a small PC requires much more power than a PS2.

We typically use a 400w-600w inverter, Monster 300Watt worst great, otherwise your local Kragen/Autozone/Pepboys will have one, usually about $30-$40, Monster is about $80 I think.

Also, with larger inverters you will want to run power directly from the bat, not from another wire in the car. Obviously make sure you fuse and put a switch on it if the box does not have 1.

Re: Power Inverter 75w vs 150w

I installed a 400w inverter from Pep Boys and put the outlets in the center console and in the left rear side panel and have been very happy with the results. Also installed two additional 12v outlets, both powered from different sources, wired to handle 15 amps (180w) next to the 110v outlets. With three 12v outlets and two 110v outlets everyone has one to use.
