How much did you spend on your system? This would be in the above "great" sound system. My last system ended in a similar fashion as what you are describing, a good head unit capable of peforming active xovers is the way to go. Along with MidBass drivers.

I have learned the following rule.
85% will schlep speakers everywhere and add an amp
12% will perform a good - great install.
2% will put in a really good system
1% will just go insane!

This post is intended to put a great sounding system without breaking the bank. Will sound 1K better than stock and 10 times better than just slapping speakers everywhere.

Yea, you are right ... my system cost to much for most people, especially the Morel drivers up front. I was just trying to make a point to take the time to design the system and not just throw equipment in a vehicle.

I think the final cost for equipment was around $3,500. I've posted these before, but here are some pictures.

6800 Deck - I like the deck because it has a large screen and 4V pre-outs.

9 inch in door

Amp Rack Build

2 JL Amps - 450 & 500.1

2 JL Amps - 450 & 500.1

Sub Box w/ 2 10 inch JL W3v3's

Tweeter/Mid Location

Morel x-overs

...guess I fall into the 1% class...I went nuts....put in my "dream system", didn't have a budget (at the time), but the end result is that it sounds incredible. Regardless, any upgrade will sound much better the stock "FJammer" system. Highly reccomended mod for anyone who appreciates good sound!

They are located in the stock dash location. They fit perfect in there.

Here is what I am running.

Morel Elate 9 speakers

How to install a great sound system in your FJ

Your ears can localize most music in the range above 90Hz. Since most subs should operate below 80hz (in the 20Hz – 80Hz range), in a good system you should not be able to localize the Bass. In other words, you ears can not tell where the bass is coming from. On the other hand, music above 90Hz, is easily localized. You ears can tell where the music in this range is coming from. This is why the placement of your drivers (speakers) is extremely important.

Above 300Hz for localization.

The frequency response on those drivers is higher than most amps can deliver.

Plus they must handle low pass signals (if any ever escaped the xovers) very well.

I think you spent more than $3500.00.

You went audiophile quality on the speaker wiring. What did you do for the power and patch cords?

disagree, but are you talking 12db or 24db octave?

IF you run at 24 it is possible to for localization to occur at a higher frequency (than stated in my previous posts). All depends how your xovers work together and how you are pushing each driver. Not to mention the quality and type of xover - active and passive can vary big time. If you are talking passive then you are not getting a good reading as they do not offer true linear monitoring of the xover points. Only Active can do that. At lest the ones I have had a chance to work with.

Above 120Hz and you will end up with crappy bass. Plus most amps won't let you go much above 200hz on the low pass filters anyhow . . .
