Re: How to install a great sound system in your FJ
Can someone tell me where to run the power wire off the battery to the rear, hoping for an existing hole that i can fit the wire thru. Also a path to get speaker and signal wires from the HU to the back. And what lenght of wire was needed.
Planning to reuse my existing setup, including the wire as much as possible - MTX 6500D sub amp, MTX 4244 4 channel, MTX 9512-44 sub, Rockford Fosgate components, Pioneer Premier HU (triple 6.5 V preouts), Stinger wiring.

Next to the master cylinder(Brakes) there is a rubber grommet. Take it out. Use a razor and cut out enough for your wire to fit through. Use that same rubber gromet to seal the hole in your firewall. Use a thin drill bit to poke through the insulation. Do not drill just use the drill bit.

how big of a power wire will you be using? your best bet would be to drill through the firewall and use a rubber grommet, then silicon around the wire inside of the grommet. for the speaker wires and rca's, just run them along the dash behind the glovebox, be careful with placement though, the glovebox really needs a lot of room to function properly. then go down the passenger side kickpanel, under the doorsill, pull the rear sill that runs along the tailgate doorjam, and pull the rear panel, not all the way out, but enough to get your hand behind it. now you have a path to lay wires. the final destination for my wires was under the trim piece that goes from the floor to the rear seat backs. i am going to start on an amp rack in a few weeks, so i wont even have that panel in it, so you might want to cut a slot or notch in the panel with a dremel. that would be the cleanest way to get wires to the back, if you are making an amp rack or mounting to the box.

Yes, an HPF is a filter to keep low frequencies from hitting your mid and high drivers. A limited version of an active X. But I am sure you know that by reading your comments.
I was asking for a head unit that has active Xs and Time alignment for $200. It does not exist.
Thanks for the info! Would like to keep this thread moving in a positive manner.
it does exist, you just have to look. used isnt a bad thing if you get what you want and are on a budget.
Re: How to install a great sound system in your FJ
I've listened and judged systems that cost under 2k that destroyed cars with 5x that in the soundoff arena. Tuning, application, equipment, tuning, install, and sometimes just plain ol' luck all come into account. Regardless, hearing is subjective, it's based on that listeners opinions, if it was quantitative like HP then we'd all be doing the same thing...what's the fun in that. I'm new to this forum but have always chimed into the audio discussions in forums to be an advocate. I don't know it all, nor will I claim so, but I will share my experience or opinion when I think it can be beneficial.
If someone feels his or her two way coax in the front off a factory headunit with a bazooka in back is sonic nirvana, that is awesome for them. If someone thinks that power that is not supplied via Audison, Arc, Zapco, etc. is blasphemous, I can almost see their perspective as well.
Back to the discussion, in regards to the "how to install...", is the thread over? I never really saw the end result.

very nice pictorial with lots of good info here! One item that I would recommend is to sound dampen/deaden your doors while you have the panels off. Dynmat, Raamat or similar product. For real good midbass in doors this is pretty important. And a layer of ensolite on top of the matt will aid in road noise supression too.
Have fun!

Re: How to install a great sound system in your FJ
nice thread..I've been looking at some new speakers so this is good for me to follow.
right now I've got 2 JL 10w1's in the back..in Nazar's Wicked CAS enclosure..and I love them...the only problem is I can turn the bass all the way down and the treble up and the bass can still drown out the sound. I listen to a lot of rap..but sometimes everybody likes some good jack johnson/dave matthews/coldplay etc. My bass is loud..and overpowering..I'm looking for a speaker set up that will equal it all out.

thoughts?
a good install of some decent components up front with some power behind them i think will really balance out you system. do you have an aftermarket head unit? and what amp is on those woofers?
