I will be installing a set of POLK 6.5" mmc6500 component speakers in my doors with the tweeters in the dash. My question is will it be okay to locate the crossovers for the front speakers in the rear of the FJ? I want to use the storage cubby in the passenger side of the back (where the stock sub would be in some FJs). Will performance suffer if the crossovers are that far away?
My Infinity amp and Polk sub are also located in the back.
Not ideal. Besides the extra cost of wiring, you will want to locate your Xovers as close to the drivers as possible. Plenty of room in the door panels.
I have just installed the mmc 6500's and they are awesome speaker if the install is done "well"...... by the way - PUT THE TWEETS IN THE DOOR (drill the hole it's worth it)- **it WILL sound much better than putting them in the dash.... have the tweets close to the polk mid bass driver....
My experience has led me to believe a few things.
#1. the crossovers are too big.
#2. DO NOT MOUNT THEM IN THE DOORS due to moisture + if you need to get to them for whatever reason (i.e., adjusting crossover points, re-doing wiring, etc....)
I love these speakers and have mounted the huge crossovers under the dash on the drivers side and in the kick panel on the passenger side.
I have been going crazy because I am getting interference through the crossovers.... (very low level noise + alt whine even when the head unit + amp is off!) I think that these crossovers are prone to exterior noises....
With that being said putting them in the doors could be good for that reason because they would be away from external sources of noise....
*Experiment with crossover placement when your car is running (+ put the amp gains very high when you experiment)
Hope I have helped : )
AND make sure you amp these speakers! THEY LOVE POWER! MIN 100 watts per channel....
please tell me if you get any noise that i was talking about above, I am curious to know since I do not know anyone else who has installed these in their FJ.

They could also be mounted behind the rear plastic interior panel. By "behind", I mean removing the panel and velcroing the xover to the metal body panel. There is a real nice space there. I have my xovers for my rear speakers mounted there. Of course, that makes for a somewhat longer cable run (under the door sills). I'm not sure how much sound quality you'd lose, but it would be a lot better than mounting them all the way in the back of the vehicle. Besides, the space behind the plastic is just begging to be used for something.
Thanks for the ideas - I like the under the seat option - I e-mail POLKs technical support this afternoon. Here's their response:
This will work just fine. Make sure to use a high quality 14 gauge
oxygen free copper composition wire to run from crossovers to the
drivers and tweeters.
Hmmmmmmmm . . . Technoreid is right too - these are some BIG Azz crossovers . . . I think I'm going to have to experiment with a couple loactions (dash/kickpanels/rear stoarge cubby).
Technoreid - do you really think putting the tweets in the doors is that much better than the dash locaton? I thought about it - maybe I'm just getting lazy with age - I put the tweets in the sail panel of the front doors of my last truck. Did you try the dash at all?

You should put your mids and tweets together, that's why I been saying the FJ is perfect for a 3-way component setup. Mids and tweets could then be put up in the dash area.
After saying all this, I know of people putting just the tweeter up in the dash area and they say it sounds good.
RipsFj,
I was actually looking at my FJ today thinking a 3-way component system would be a nice set up and that there appears to be enough room for one. So many choices - so little cash on hand.
