So, I just got my FJ less than a week ago and I love it, it has a good stock stereo with a nice AUX in for my IPOD and a couple other Ipod integration options but there is only 1 problem, NO PLACE TO PUT THE IPOD. I mean, you can put it in the cupholder or the glovebox but I think there should be something better, something that keeps it from sliding around, especially in off-roading situations and something that looks like it belongs there.
Well, I spent all weekend designing and prototyping and this is what I came up with.
What do ya'll think? If something like this was on the market, how many of you would buy it? What would you expect to pay for it?
The finished model will either be painted the silver color of the panel behind it, or the same color as the optional exterior color dash panels.

Re: CUSTOM Ipod dash mount
My Nano sits perfectly in the little rectangular tray in my center console, next to the E-brake. I routed the aux. wire behind the dash, under the center console, and out the E-brake lever flap to the tray. Nearly invisible.

I would paint it to match the dark interior and locate it to the left and above the glove box. Have a wire coming out the side going down to the AUX plug.

Looks nice Goatherder! 1911, can we see a picture of your set-up?

No access to the multpin/headphone in the bottom of the nano? Or do you have a solution to that brewing?
Some design suggestions for you Goatherder: 1) use the dimple texture like that of the dash top and center console instead of the pinstripe effect. 2) make it compatible for all versions of iPod by using removable inserts. 3) and if you haven't already, make an access hole in the bottom for multipin and/or headphone jack.
I am using a USA-Spec ipod integration unit. Not the best out there, but it' what I got for now. It's behind the dash and the multipin plug comes out near my ignition. I made a custom mount for mine using Aluminum and neoprene rubber. The challenge was designing it so the bottom of the nano would be accessible for my multipin adapter to connect.

That is a very cleanly executed design. Aesthetically I like it a lot, but I have a few concerns.
With that set up, the ipod on the left of the steering wheel would require either rewiring to hide the connection, or a dangly wire to the aux jack. Also, it seems to scream, "I've got something worth stealing" to any nosy investigating eyes.
I keep my 80 gig ipod either in a cup holder or lightly "wedged" in front of the 4WD shifter. It seems to stay real nice there. Of course I never leave the ipod in view when parked.
