Think of it as a remote control high wattage/amperage power switch that is activated by a separate low wattage/amperage trigger (the actual on/off switch on your dash).
Rather than routing heavy-duty power wires to and through a heavy-duty dash-mounted switch on your dash, the relay acts as a on/off connection for between your KC Lights and a fused connection to the battery. That way the primary connections between the lights, fuses and power are kept to a minumum. And, the remote dash switch only has to send a low current signal to the relay to activate the connection.
A very common connection scheme for headlights, horns and other high-draw components.
