Power, speaker and interconnect routing

Looking at my rig (sans interior), it looks very possible to route wiring back at the side/roof area. Just looking for any opinions pos. or neg. regarding this route. In routing audio wiring, you want to isolate from oem wiring, also running power seperate from speaker/ interconnects, and I see this being ideal (no wiring in the way).

Re: Power, speaker and interconnect routing

ummmmm...yeah, sure...sounds great...

Pardon my ignorance but what the hell are you talking about? Do you mean would it be feasible to run your wiring through the headliner instead of under the flooring? If that is what you meant, you may want to search through some of the other posts on removing the headliner. You have to tear apart almost the entire interior of the rig to get it out. I have all mine run under the flooring and have not had any trouble. I have never worried about the factory wiring in any aftermarket instal I have done. I just make sure to not run my amp power / ground leads near my speaker wire.

sans interior = my interior is out, that's why I was looking at this. Pics are in my gallery, click on member's name to access.

Re: Power, speaker and interconnect routing

Well then, sure...go for it...it just sounds like a lot of trouble to me for very little benefit. Just my .02!!

Note to self: need to remember the word sans

Re: Power, speaker and interconnect routing

I guess because I always look at the cons to everything and try to trouble shoot before anything goes wrong is why I see little benefit. What happens if something does happen to the wiring and you have to get to it? Or you want to change out a part of your system and you have to change out wiring? In my life, if it can go wrong, it eventually will. So, I try to stick to the simple road. Makes life easier in the long run.

My opinion, since you asked, is that it's a mildly bad idea. If idea is to have better sound, it's very unlikely that you'd gain anything you can hear. There are many installers and people with very nice setups here, and as far as I know, none of them have ever posted "man, if only I hadn't run cable on the floor... !"

On the floor, the routing is clear and understood so you won't run into any unforseen gotchas. On the other, nobody (again, as far as I know) has run wire upstairs. So while it may look good to the eyeball, you may also run into some frustrating problems. Additionally, you will have to use considerably more cable to get the job done. More cable is potentially more interference on rougly the same level as you might avoid by not running it on the floor.

So I'd say the risk (small) outweighs the gain (virtually zero).

Re: Power, speaker and interconnect routing

I welcome all comments Chris. It's certainly not totally an issue of interference. As far as length, It's ~2.5ft to the roof or floor from the firewall penetration, and I'm seriously considering a roof mounted amp/preamp install ala northshorevoodoo(thanks for the idea Sean). Instead of running parallel to any OEM wiring, there's a whole lot of room away from OEM wiring upstairs, and should actually be an easier run. No screwing around with stuffing it under the floor mat, etc.
The rear seat area will have a molded fiberglass tub, with flat top even with the cargo floor, and will be my second choice for location of the amp and preamp if there is enough room (sketchy at this point) Either locations will be mechanically ventilated.

Well if you're going to mount amps in the ceiling, it's a no brainer. If you're mounting them on the floor, my guesstimate is that your run is about 4-5 feet longer. Between added length and running next to OEM wiring, it's about a wash (too close to 0 to notice either way).

My cable runs under the door sills, so it's clean. I have a little cable under the rear plastic to get connections to my under-seat amps.

Like my pappy used to say, "if you find a solution to a problem, stop there... before you cut your thumb off... (stupid kid)..."
