Exclamation FJ has BUILT IN crossovers?

Hi, I had a stereo installed at BestBuy last week. Long story short, it started to go in and out. I brought it in and they opened the door panel. I started talking about where is the crossover from the Polk momo midrange / tweeters I had installed? They said ... "oh we threw them away" we used the FJ's "factory" crossovers, they are behind the metal in the door" IS this true? I didn't have a subwoofer in my FJ when it came out of the factory. Also the speakers that they took out..the factory default ones in the door. Were oblong type round speakers, that seemed to have the tweeter built into them Does any of this sound right? Does the FJ have "factory" crossovers?

They THREW AWAY your Polk crossovers? That is totally WACK. Did you tell them that the whole reason you were upgrading stereo parts was, to, well UPGRADE STEREO PARTS?

I don't believe there are any "external" crossovers on the FJ. The door speakers are *cough* "full range" and the dash speakers have a little bass blocking capacitor on them.

Anyway, long story short, that is very very wrong. I would ask to speak to the store manager, make him fix it and refund the money you paid for the install since a) it wasted your time and b) they totally hosed the whole thing.

Re: FJ has BUILT IN crossovers?

there might be an inductor in the door and a capacitor for the dash speakers, but that is a simple 1st order crossover for each speaker. it has most likely less protection than aftermarket crossovers due to a gradual slope. an aftermarket crossover is designed for your woofer and tweeter. you need to go back to best buy and talk to a manager, get them to install your crossovers, and dont pay for it, wait and watch the install. you are running an aftermarket amp as well right?

Re: FJ has BUILT IN crossovers?

What a joke!! I would demand Bestbuy put the Polk x-overs in. There are no 'factory x-overs' in the FJ. The factory speakers may have some caps or coils on them, but nothing more. The front doors do come with 6x9's, and I think they are full range speakers. I bet they are letting your Polk mids run full, and roll off naturally, and they probably just but a cap on the tweeters.

The Bestbuy you went to has a bunch of morons working there!

Re: FJ has BUILT IN crossovers?

So basically the midranges are getting overpowers by bass...and there is no crossover cutting off the lows? They said there was nothing to be done about it now, that they crossovers were already thrown away. I said ..yea they could be being sold on Ebay. Is this going to effect the sound dramatically? or am I being irrational?

you may not notice a difference in sound until you really jump on them with a lot of power behind them, but you wont have the best protection for your speakers. i would go into best buy and explain to them that THEY through away the crossovers YOU paid for and the same ones YOU paid to have installed with the speakers. what area are you from? i wouldnt take no for an answer. i would get my crossovers free of charge and have them installed elsewhere at their expense.

Re: FJ has BUILT IN crossovers?

I'm in Northern Va, I'm tired of having to go back. I don't know what I'm going to do. I almost think my crossovers are in someone elses car now. Who would throw them away?

Re: FJ has BUILT IN crossovers?

Another lesson in not getting things installed at Bestrape.

Learn to do it yourself. Speakers are so easy, it's a true waste of money to have them installed. You could do a competition type job for less than you paid for the other, and you would still have stuff leftover for other speakers.

Bestrape is a joke.
