Question Looking for a Dual Purpose GPS (Highway / Marine)

I'm a GPS novice and was wondering if such a thing even exists? You know, one that I could plug into the car for a trip and then transfer to a boat for navigating. Any advice or links would be appreciated.

Re: Looking for a Dual Purpose GPS (Highway / Marine)

If you don't want one with voice activation get a hand held and a couple of mounts and hardwires. You could then move it from vehicle to boat to foot if you like. I have the Garmin 60csx and couldn't be happier with it. I got a 2 gig micro memory stick and have all of the US Topo and US City Navigator on it. You could be selective about what areas you want on it and get marine, road and topo maps for your area on it with no trouble at all.

Check out this thread, Post #54. You buy the Garmin Docking station for your FJ but buy the Garmain Quest 2. You can ake it out and use it Hiking, boating or quading.

I have the Garmin 76c and I'm pretty happy with it. Road maps and marine charts available , cost extra of course.

I have the Garmin 376, which is designed specifically for boat and road use. There's a range of similar garmin units. The 376 even has sonar capability (I just use the 376 on land and got it for the ease with which I could change out maps). Checkout:

Nice, very nice. I'd really like to see how you mounted this in your rig as it looks like a pretty big unit.

I looked at the 376 and the 276 and i was just wondering what makes the 376 better, well besides the XM Satellite feature. Is it really worth the additional $300.00 for someone who's just venturing into this?

Re: Looking for a Dual Purpose GPS (Highway / Marine)

I bought a color Garmin 60c off fleabay as a learning tool. It cost me two hundred bucks, then bought City Nav 8. It doesn't talk but will beep till the cows come home if not muted or adjusted. I use it with a couple of different mounts(Ram Mounts). One for the FJ on the drivers A pillar grab handle and also use it on my motorcycle. It is completely waterproof and pretty light wieght.
There are a lot of more expensive models out there, but as I've never own one, I thought it would be a great learning tool. Now I can use it like a pro and know what I want for the next one I buy.

Good luck

Doug
