Thumbs up Clean No Holes Drilled Large CB Mount

I thought I would pass this on to anyone that maybe interested in the same kind of CB install. I have a large Single Side Band Cobra 148 NW ST. I took it out of my pickup and decided I wanted to install it in my FJ. When I started looking around the forums, all I was able to find was people screwing it in the most obvious place in the glove box. I myself am not an advocate of making holes in my interior or, at least it will be a few years down the road before that happens. If I ever want to remove the CB I would have ugly holes to deal with. So, I removed the center console and found two bolts in a great location for securing a bracket. One is the bolt that secures a Yaw sensor the other is a bolt that secures the shift box linkage. I measured the distance between the two bolts, (Circled) in the picture; I then cut out a ruff template of a mount.

Existing Bolt locations for use of new CB Bracket. The new CB mount is allready installed in this pic.

Here are the measurements for the CB template. This will fit most large size CB’s.

I next bought a 12”x18” 16ga steel plate from Lowe’s for $19.95 for use for the CB Mount. I traced my template onto the sheet of steel, I then cut it out using a handheld grinder w/ cut-off wheel. I took it over to the belt sander and cleaned up the edges, then painted the mount flat black. Sorry, I should have taken some pic’s before I installed it in the console. I then installed my “Bandi CB Mount” Wow what a great invention Bandi!, very clean, I won’t go into the install of it here, there are plenty of thread covering this topic, I did run my coax through the box where the jack is stored inside fender walls then back down under the cable runs inside / under the plastic gray step along the drivers door. I then fed it under the dash along the drivers side, then back into the center console. It took about an hour and a half to “feed” it through the side of the vehicle walls, but well worth the effort IMO, VERY clean. I then have only about 4” of the coax that come out underneath the center console along the passenger side up into the CB. You can’t see any wires or coax. Here are some finished pics of the installation.

The post sticking up is my Ram Laptop mount bracket. I used an adhesive backed microphone holder to attaché the mic to the console. As a side note, The CB bracket has to come out at least 2” from the side of the console due to the angle of the console in the FJ is at an slope. In order to have the CB fit perpendicular to the upper portion of the console I had to make the bracket have a 2.5” space. It worked out really good in my case, I installed my “Uniden Bearcat BCT7 Police Scanner” in between the console and the CB. It fit nice and snug, perfect. The next few pic’s I took this evening with the lights off, so you may see what it looks like in the dark. Hay, maybe call it the “Shadow CB Mount”..he he he…J/K..

A closer look

As a side note, If I had to make another one, I would make the mount a 1/4" further back from the front, this way the glove box and the CB won't be as tight when removal of the Glove box.

Re: Clean No Holes Drilled Large CB Mount

I'm interested in this but have a few questions:

1. Can you still move the passenger seat forward/backward? Is seat travel now limited?
2. How close is the glove box lid from the CB when you open the glove box? Do they touch?
3. How did you bend the steel? Are there holes you drilled to mount the CB to the bracket?

Thanks for the info!

1. Seat is a little limited moving forward, but I haven’t found that to be a problem.
2. Mine does about 1/8” too much forward. If I had to build another one I would make it just ¼” more to the rear.
3. Bending is very easy, I used two pieces of 2x4 in a vise, then slowly bent it over using a hammer. I don’t have a metal brake, but sometimes we have to make do.
4. Yes, My wife sits there and never complains

I hope this helps.
