Alpine Type-R's are component speakers meant for the door...components come with tweets so what is the point of adding more to the dash tweets if you already have them in the door? If I remember the dash speakers are what... 1-3.5"? where as you can fit 8" Subwoofers or component speakers in the door, so I can't see the dash drowning out door speakers...but okay...I'm not an "audiophile" or anything, but that doesn't make much sense to me that it's possible for those small dash speakers to drown out massive door speakers...did I miss something or misunderstand something?
the fact that the dash speakers have the glass helping for reflections (the good kind) makes them super loud. imaging will be terrible with tweeters in the door. and, type r's are available in coaxial and component forms, and i dont believe they have a convertable mounting setup on the components, so where are you going to mount the tweeter in the door? the driver is going to take up most of the opening, and with the tweeters being extremely directional, they will need to be in the perforated area, which isnt very do-able since the mid is fairly directional. why wouldnt you take advantage of the dash location especially since its to accessable and easy.

a tweeter will play way louder than a mid, even in the door. in the dash, its insane.

If you put in very powerful new side speakers (door speakers) say Alpine Type-R's or the new JL W800 is it? then no matter what you to do the rear or front (dash speakers) they will be drowned out since the side speakers will be so much more powerful...I haven't done any upgrades to my audio system yet, but from what I hear all you need is high quality powerful side speakers since that's pretty much where you are getting all your sound from....I remember getting an estimate I had rear speakers, front speakers, etc on the sheet, and the guys said it's pretty much a waste of money with high quality side door speakers as they WILL drown out the rear and dash speakers... That'll be my next MAJOR upgrade, Type-R's in the doors, then a Alpine Amp, and a JL Stealth Box in the rear. I've also heard of some people who just replace the side door ones and then disable the others.

I disagree - you still hear the POS's. With speakers, the weakest link theory comes into play.

with any dash mounted speaker, it will stand out compared to the rest of the system. just how cars acoustics are. i think he thought i meant leave the factory speakers up there, when i meant mounting the aftermarket tweeter in the dash.

Hm....so I should NOT go with components in the door, instead get regular ones, put new tweeters in the dash, and so forth? I thought most members on here had components in the door...guess I was mistaken :-\. When I went to the audio installation place "Car Tunes" (major professionals around here they are the guys that work on ferrari, rolls royce, etc) they said they would have to make a custom bracket\mound for the Type-R's (components) but they already did it for a previous FJ cruiser that was in there.

custom brackets that will take them every bit of 30 seconds a piece to make on a router. you do component mid or woofer, depending on what you've got, int he door, with the tweeter in the dash. and yes, they will have to make another 30 second mounting plate for the tweeters to go in the dash.

And if I order from Crutchfield will they still have to make them? I've heard that Crutchfield includes the brackets...?

Re: Toyota-SHAME ON YOU!!!- speakers

Tweeter in the doors work just fine. They compliment the dash speakers and voices are crystal clear. They are smooth and crisp and define the mid-ranges very nicely.

POLK MOMO MMC690 component with cross overs in doors , ECLIPSE 3.5" SPEAKERS CAR AUDIO SE8233 in dash, POLK AUDIO db400 4" 2-WAY DB CAR SPEAKERS PAIR 305W rear. Total speaker cost off the internet less than $200.

The Polk MMC690 6 by 9's, have 1-1/4" silk/polymer dome tweeter, 3/4" silk supertweeter built in, and 2-way crossover.

used the factory speaker mount to mount them.

It helps to cut out the old speaker cover so they are not muffled.
