I am half way through replacing the speakers in the front doors. I was SHOCKED at what I found, by far the cheapest OEM speakers I have ever sceen. You can get better speakers in a $15 boom box at Wal-Mart. I am calling Toyota on Monday and demanding the $1.59 they paid for both speakers back!
There are threads here about what is the first mod you should do. Replace these sickening pieces of crap Toyota stuck in our doors.
Don't stop there. The dash and (if you have them) D-pillar speakers are just as sorry Toyota introduces the industries first disposible speakers . . .
If you put in very powerful new side speakers (door speakers) say Alpine Type-R's or the new JL W800 is it? then no matter what you to do the rear or front (dash speakers) they will be drowned out since the side speakers will be so much more powerful...I haven't done any upgrades to my audio system yet, but from what I hear all you need is high quality powerful side speakers since that's pretty much where you are getting all your sound from....I remember getting an estimate I had rear speakers, front speakers, etc on the sheet, and the guys said it's pretty much a waste of money with high quality side door speakers as they WILL drown out the rear and dash speakers... That'll be my next MAJOR upgrade, Type-R's in the doors, then a Alpine Amp, and a JL Stealth Box in the rear. I've also heard of some people who just replace the side door ones and then disable the others.

components with the tweets int he dash is what you want. anything up on the dash will really drown out door mounted speakers. i have my tweets 3db down from where my mids are and they blend perfectly, and i have 150 watts a speaker on the mids and 50 watts a piece on the tweets.

Alpine Type-R's are component speakers meant for the door...components come with tweets so what is the point of adding more to the dash tweets if you already have them in the door? If I remember the dash speakers are what... 1-3.5"? where as you can fit 8" Subwoofers or component speakers in the door, so I can't see the dash drowning out door speakers...but okay...I'm not an "audiophile" or anything, but that doesn't make much sense to me that it's possible for those small dash speakers to drown out massive door speakers...did I miss something or misunderstand something?
